Mainichi: Can you explain the network problems associated with Final Fantasy XI?
Wada-san: The main problem concerns the traffic burden being placed on the member registration server. You see, the PlayOnline network servers are divided between games and business related matters, such as new member registration. While the game servers are able to handle more than 100,000 users simultaneously, our business servers can handle far less traffic. We tested all our servers thoroughly before releasing Final Fantasy XI, but the level of traffic on our business servers has been much higher than we anticipated
Mainichi: What other problems have there been?
Wada-san: There were a number of other issues associated with the online registration system. For example, the verification system used for credit cards and the overall process took considerable time. All the while, users would continue to hit the submit button on the registration system, which heightened the traffic problem. Most users weren't familiar with the amount of processing time required, which is why they continued to hit the submit button on their applications. We feel if they were better informed about the registration process they might have been more relaxed, and we're trying to build that sense of awareness now.
Mainichi: What's the current state of the registration system for Final Fantasy XI?
Wada-san: About 40,000 people had registered as of May 20. Traffic varies, but the number of simultaneous players has topped 25,000. Despite all the registration issues, more than 10,000 people signed up for the PlayOnline service on launch day. We shipped 120,000 copies initially, and expect tens of thousands of more people to register in the coming weeks.
Mainichi: You've decided to suspend charging people for the PlayOnline service until the end of June. Why?
Wada-san: Immediately following the launch we monitored the registration system problems and weren't sure how long the problem would take to correct. Also, we began to consider the possibility that 100,000 or 200,000 simultaneous players want to access the network - what would happen then? While our intention was to create an easy game environment for players, millions of problems can occur. In order to stabilize things efficiently, we need the cooperation of players to refine the network accordingly. Therefore, we decided to suspend charging people for the service till the end of June.
Mainichi: How many inquiries have you received regarding network problems?
Wada-san: The most frequent inquiry we receive concerns the ID code which is given to players after they enter their registration data. Each code is unique and specific to individual players. Considering the personal nature of this information, we need to discuss the situation over the telephone. The ID is only given to the player once during the registration process, and in
their haste to play, many players end up copying down the ID number incorrectly.
Mainichi: What other inquiries have you received?
Wada-san: We've had minor problems with some game servers - either becoming unstable or lacking some game data. We've been working on that and adding more servers, just in case one fails unexpectedly in the future. We're also trying to resolve double billing issues resulting from the registration
process. Naturally, we expected most of those issues and are handling them quickly.
Mainichi: What's your outlook for the future of the PlayOnline service?
Wada-san: We will continue making adjustments to the service and Final Fantasy XI. Even if it takes 100 years, we're going to keep the players abreast of the problems with the network and succeed with their cooperation.
