Sony announces a two-year deal with Take-Two to make Grand Theft Auto III and future installments in the series exclusive to the PlayStation 2.
Sony Computer Entertainment America and Take-Two Interactive have announced an exclusive deal for the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Under terms of the agreement, Grand Theft Auto III and future installments in the series released before October 2004 will be released only on the Sony PlayStation 2 platform. This deal follows the recent release of Grand Theft Auto III for the PC, and it is unknown if the agreement eliminates the possibility of PC versions of upcoming Grand Theft Auto games coming out in the next two years.
Grand Theft Auto III was released for the PlayStation 2 last October and became the best-selling video game of 2001. The game also won numerous awards, including GameSpot's Video Game of the Year Award for 2001. Take-Two's Rockstar Games division recently announced Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a follow-up to the game scheduled for release on the PlayStation 2 this fall.

The follow-up to Rockstar's best-selling action game is coming this fall to the PlayStation 2.
Take-Two Interactive's Rockstar Games division has announced Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the follow-up to its best-selling action game Grand Theft Auto III. The game is scheduled for release this fall exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 2. Although little else about the game has been revealed, it is known that the game is set in the 1980s in Vice City, a place filled with glamour, power, and corruption.
"The success of Grand Theft Auto III has made us very proud, but it has also motivated us enormously," said Sam Houser, the executive producer of the Grand Theft Auto franchise and president of Rockstar Games. "The work currently being done by our development and production teams in Edinburgh and New York is going to surpass the efforts of last year, as we set our sights on making an even more revolutionary gaming experience. This will be reflected in the size of the game, the scope of the gameplay, the extent of the player's freedom, the quality of production value, and the all-important sense of style."
Grand Theft Auto III was released on the PlayStation 2 last October and became the best-selling video game of 2001. The game was recently released for the PC.
