Thank you for your helpful advises to every one
I install mandrake Linux 8.1 in a separate partition done by partition magic 7
All right it’s good for me also I had red hat Linux 7.2 but I did
T install it coz it does not comfort me
The old problem the mandrake dos not see my Motorola fax modem
I know that mandrake 8.1 have a kernel better than that which the fax want
Then I get from the not the file of an older kernel (linux-2.4.5.tar.bz2) also the Motorola file
The problem is I can not execrate this file also how I can install it beside my mandrake kern cal
Please tell me in details and use commands I use under the interference genome1.4

The only PCI modem that I know it works with Linux is Motorola SM56. So is that the modem that you have?

Motorola SM56 modem driver for Linux requires kernel 2.4.x and I think that Mandrake has a 2.4 kerenl, doesn't it?
To find out what is the kernel that you have type: uname -r

Compiling the kernel is not easy because there are a LOT of options to choose from. These options are different based on what hardware you have in your computer and what you want to do with the computer.

I have a book that has a whole chapter on compiling the kernel and that's how I leanred most of what I konw about Linux, from a book.

To understand what I mean by LOTS of options, type the following:

tar jxvf linux-2.4.5.tar.bz

cd linux

make mrprpoer

make xconfig

Now, you have to choose the processor type, mouse, filesystem, sound card, network connections, etc

This is the method to start compiling the kernel but you have to find out what options to choose BASED on your hardware.

Arabic is my first language and obviously is your first language. It's better if you just write
in Arabic because your English needs some..........ahhhh......work!

I write in Arabic because my keyboard does not have Arabic letters on it & I type VERY slow in Arabic.
