What do you get when you mix the strongest name in video game sports with some of music's biggest acts? A pretty killer combo, that's for sure. And starting soon, that's exactly what Electronic Arts is going to offer. At the 6th annual Ziff Davis Game Summit in Napa today, Electronic Arts made two rather stunning announcements: a new game based around a partnership with DefJam Records called DefJam Wrestling and a new music label known as EA Trax to make available the hottest music acts to the library of EA games. EA vice president of marketing Jeff Karp gave details on both during a presentation about building and maintaining world-class sports brands.
DefJam Wrestling sounds like a surefire recipe for commercial success -- take some of the biggest artists from America's number one record label and place them in a wrestling game. But it's more than just a licensing deal -- this is a complete collaboration between DefJam and EA. DefJam artists such as Ludacris, Jay Z, MethodMan, RedMan, Capone, N.O.R. E. and DMX are all on board, and are not only recording voices but adding their own input to the game. Based on some footage of DefJam Wrestling that was shown at the event, you'll be able to choose from a variety of wrestlers and compete against these big name stars in the ring.

Even more interesting, though, was EA's announcement of its own music label, EA Trax. While plenty of games these days pride themselves on featuring real songs from real artists, EA plans to take things a giant step further. Every EA Sports/Big game from now on is going to have music from some of today's most popular artists. But it won't just be standard licensed music -- these will be brand new, and in some cases not even released tracks, for the games. In fact, certain artists will even be making original tracks specifically for and about the game titles. The company cited Bon Jovi as a perfect example of what EA Trax is all about. Those of you who've been anxiously awaiting the kickoff of this year's NFL season should know that Bon Jovi will be headlining the opening festivities with a concert in New York. Because of his connection with the NFL, EA decided to secure a track from Bon Jovi's upcoming album for Madden 2003 -- and it'll be released in the game a full two months before the album hits. EA also played a sample of a song from Electra records artist Fabulous that is being made specifically for this year's NBA Live. Interestingly, Fabulous is timing the release of his new album to coincide with the launch of Live.

Other companies supplying music for upcoming EA games include Saliva (in Tiger Woods 2003), Queen of the Stone Age (NHL 2003), Uncle Cracker (Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2), Nappy Roots, POD, and Papa Roach.

lol i'm not really looking forward to the game, but the record lable and having some of my favorite artists on upcomming sports games is a real plus. sorry if this is old news.
