The people try to recover from its aftermath and enjoy the newly attained peace. Amid such times Yuya Shiina, a roughneck girl who earns money by capturing outlaws, mistakes a roaming and peace-loving medicine seller Mibu Kyoshiro for the legendary wanted man "Onime-no-Kyo." But she soon realizes that she is wrong when she sees that Kyoshiro is just a weakling. Nevertheless, she ends up capturing Kyoshiro anyway - he is wanted for running off without paying for a meal. As they travel together Kyoshiro tries to help Yuya catch another wanted criminal. In the process Kyoshiro is cornered. Then he mumbles, "Here he comes," and the color of his eyes turn a deep red. He pulls out his sword which he had never touched before and suddenly, Onime-no-Kyo, the legendary assassin said to have killed one thousand men with this sword, is standing there. Kyoshiro and Kyo: Two spirits in one body. Yuya is looking for a "man with a wound on his back" who killed her older brother. The two head to Edo together. One after another, samurai come after Onime-no-Kyo. Why do Kyoshiro and Kyo share the same body? Historical figures, such as Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga, emerge in the story and the mystery of the two souls is gradually resolved.

Title: Samurai Deeper Kyo
Genre: Action
Company: Kodansha/Studio DeenEpisodes Seen: 26
During the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the name of "Demon Eyes Kyo", the Slayer of a Thousand men, became a legend. However, he disappeared after a meteor hit him while he was engaged in battle. Samurai Deeper Kyo was looking to be a new kenshin. Not only because of the similarities (even if Kyo is the exact opposite of kenshin), but because it has potential. While so far I haven't been disappointed, I have the feeling this series could be so much more. The plot isn't bad at all, and at the very least is workable. Most of the characters are entertaining to see, and one cares for them; plus they do seem to grow during the course of the series (Kyo and Yuya in particular). However, the otherwise good story is dragged down by a "Monster of the Week" problem. Most episodes end with a battle against a Kenyou or some other character.
The Kenyou's designs range from cool to patently ridiculous (the flying enemy comes to mind...) to sometimes cheesy. Sadly, this can also be said about the characters. While some are great (Kyo and Benitora are examples), some feel quite out of place, like the westerner guy who wields an energy weapon. The animation, although it has some high points, is nothing special. There are many stills and some reused cels during fights, which look like they were drawn in a hurry. Even with its flaws, I find what I've seen enjoyable and worth watching. I just hope the second half picks up and does
Kyoshiro Mibu
A traveling medicine peddler, Kyoshiro Mibu is peaceful, lighthearted, and a bit of a coward. He carries a 5 shaku long sword with him, but claims it's just for show. Unbeknownst to anyone, he holds within him the spirit of Demon Eyes Kyo, and when provoked, the red-eyed samurai takes over Kyoshiro's body.
Demon Eyes Kyo
Kyo is the other personality in Kyoshiro's body. Kyo, one of the original Muramasas, has blood red eyes and is said to have killed 1000 men at the Battle of Sekigahara. There's a legendary one million ryo bounty on his head.
Yuya Shiina
Yuya is a clever and beautiful bounty hunter, the best anywhere on Tokaido-chu. She seeks a man with a scar on his back - the man who killed her brother. After discovering the secret of Kyoshiro and Kyo, she hopes to unravel their mystery (and possibly to collect on their bounty).
Izumono Okuni
A mysterious and powerful woman, Okuni is a former priestess of the Izumo temple who claims to have been Kyo's lover
Jiban
A samurai who was shamed by Kyo at Sekigahara. He took a job as a yojimbo to a local Daikan in order to perfect his killing technique. Now he's ready to face Kyo again and regain his honor
