Oscar Profile
OSCAR - ASTRONOTUS OCELLATUS:
ORIGIN: Amazon River, South America.
TEMPERAMENT: Peaceful towards fish of the same size and larger. Do not keep with smaller fish as the Oscars may 'bully' and attack them.
CARE: Feed with live foods and flakes such as cut up earthworms and guppy fry. Oscars like strong filteration aswell.
WATER CONDITIONS: pH 6.5 - 8.0, Temperature - 23 - 28*C. (73-82*F)
GENDER: The gender can be hard to tell. The female may be a bit more rounded and the male grows larger.
BREEDING: Raise the temperature up to about 30*C and feed them more often than you normally do. (Adding livefoods to Cichlids diet makes them breed faster) Put 4 - 6 Oscars in the tank that are medium - large in size. Place 2 - 3 clean rocks in the tank (appropriate size for eggs to be laid on) and put them on a slant of 45 degrees.
COMMENTS ON THE OSCAR: There has been reports of a 'hole in head disease' with Oscars getting too much live foods. Just to be on the safe side I think beginners to this fish should take this in mind and dont 'overdose' on live foods. I advise breeders to use live foods because in my experience I have found Cichlids grow faster, breed faster and are much more happier.
