When Keitarou Urashima was a child, he used to play with his childhood love at the playground near Hinatasou, an hotel owned by his grandmother. They made a promise to go to Toudai (Tokyo Daigaku, the University of Tokyo) together, because it was said that if two people can get into Toudai together, they can achieve happiness.
Soon after that, the girl had to leave, and Keitarou didn't see her ever again.
Years later, Keitarou had finished High School and was preparing for the tests to enter a university. He had devoted his life to the promise he made with the girl from his childhood, even though he can't remember her name.
However, since Keitarou isn't a good student and also uses to fade into daydreams all the time, he failed the entrance exams twice already. His parents want him to give up, too. So, he's moving out, hoping that he can live at Hinatasou for a while.
When he arrives, the houe is completely empty, everyone's out. So, he decides to take a bath in the hotel's hotspring meanwhile. What he doesn't know, his grandmother had changed the hotel into an all-girls dormitory a while ago. When the girls return and find him in the hotspring, they believe he's a pervert and chase him all over the building. Finally, Keitarou's aunt Haruka who lives nearby saves him from the girl's wrath. She explains to them that Keitarou's grandmother has left for a journey around the world, making Keitarou the dorm's manager.
The girls don't like that at first. But, due to a misunderstanding, they think he's already a Toudai student, and so they welcome him. They find out that he is not soon enough, but since the dorm had to close if there was no manager, they let him stay.
Since Keitarou is clumsy, he often barges in on the girls when they're changing or taking a bath, or he stumbles and crashes into one of them, accidentially touching their breasts... However, he doesn't do this on purpose (honestly ^^;). Nevertheless, he is taken for a pervert and gets beaten up all the time.
Anyway, as the story developes, all the Hinata girls are more or less in love with Keitarou, may it be the simple adoration from the shy Shinobu or that hate-love mixture from Motoko...
Narusegawa Naru, one of the girls, is attempting for Toudai, too, so she and Keitarou use to study together. They soon develop a liking for each other (though Naru would never admit it). In fact, Naru could be Keitarou's childhood love.
The main storyline focuses on the relationship between Keitarou, Naru and Mutsumi (another girl who could be Keitarou's childhood love) and their struggle to get into Toudai. Besides that, side storylines explore the other character's lives, problems, hopes and dreams, too.
Up to now, there are 25 Anime Episodes of Love Hina, plus the X-mas and Spring Specials and the 3-part OVA "Love Hina Again". The Manga has 14 Volumes. While the overall storylines in the Anime and the Manga are the same, they differ in detail and timeline. The Manga goes deeper into detail and developes the story more slowly, too.

Keitarou is trying hard to pass the entrance exam for Toudai (Tokyo Daigaku, the University of Tokyo). Though he already failed twice and his parents want him to give up on Toudai, he won't aim for another university with easier entrance tests.
The reason why he is so fixated on Toudai is a promise that was made 15 years before. Back then, Keitarou and his childhood love promised to go to Toudai together one day. He has never seen her again since that time, and he can't even remember her name, but he has dedicated his life to that promise.
However, he also feels kind of guilty, living on his parents money and everything, so he decides to move out, hoping that he could live at Hinatasou, his grandmother's hotel, for a while.
What Keitarou doesn't know: The hotel is now an all-girls dormitory, and his grandmother left on a trip around the world just the day before. And she made him the manager of Hinatasou.
So when Keitarou arrives at Hinatasou, there's no one there to welcome him. So he decides to take a bath in the hotel's hot spring first.
Trouble arrives when some of the girls return and enter the hot spring to take a bath themselves. Taken for a pervert, he ends up being chased all over the building by the angry girls...
Keitarou soon becomes the center of everyday life at Hinatasou, in several aspects. Being taken advantage and made fun of by Mitsune, used as a training dummy by Motoko... etc.
All the girls are more or less in love with him. But none of them would admit it, of course.
Keitarou and Naru, one of the girls, develop a liking for each other. She is trying for Toudai as well, so they often study together. Could she even be that girl from his childhood?...
Keitarou is a naive and clumsy guy, and nicer than what is actually good for him. He has a hard time saying no, so it's easy for the tricky Mitsune to talk him into things and take advantage of him.
Being clumsy and not careful at some times, he often walks in on the girls when they're changing, or stumbling and falling on them etc... Usually, he receives a punch from Naru or a Katana strike from Motoko for this.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-naru.gif
Naru is one of the residents of Hinatasou. Her room is directly above Keitarou's, and they use a hole in the floor as a shortcut and as a convenient way of inter-room communication.
Naru, like Keitarou, is aiming for Toudai. She is a very good and intense student, she is even considered the national Number 1 in the preparation tests. So it's natural that Keitarou is studying together with her.
Later in the story when Otohime Mutsumi moves in at an apartment near Hinatasou, she uses to study together with Naru and Keitarou, too.
Despite all of Naru's efforts, she failed the entrance exam in the first attempt.
Naru and Keitarou quickly develop feelings for each other. She would never admit it, though, not even to herself. Nevertheless, it's usually her who takes the initiative in romantic situations. But of course, Keitarou messes up or someone barges in on them just the second before they'd kiss...
Because of misunderstandings that result from Keitarou's clumsyness and naiveness, she is often mad at him, which means Keitarou is getting beat up by her.
Naru's reason for aiming for Toudai is also a promise she made. When she was at high school, Noriyasu Seta was her tutor, and Naru had a crush on him. So she promised him to get into Toudai.
Also, it looks like she learned some Martial Arts from Seta, which is the reason why she can deal out those powerful punches and kicks.
Naru could possibly be the girl from Keitarou's childhood. Her parents sent her to Hinatasou when she was little because at that time she had a weak constitution. At the same time, Keitarou and Mutsumi were at Hinatasou, too.
She doesn't seem to remember anything from that time, though, because she was only 2 years old back then...
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-mutsumi.gif
Mutsumi lives on a small island near Okinawa. She is trying for Toudai like Keitarou and Naru, but hasn't succeeded yet. Though doing good at the preparation tests, she either forgot to put her name on the exam paper, or, due to her weak constitution, fainted on the way and got taken to the hospital.
Keitarou and Naru meet Mutsumi on their trip to Kyoto and become friends instantly. Especially Keitarou gets along with her very well, since she is even more clumsy and forgetful than he is.
Considering Mutsumi's weak constitution, Keitarou and Naru decide to accompany on her way home.
Since Mutsumi's island is a bit off Okinawa, they leave the ferry boat in a small inflatable boat - and first get lost at sea, then strand on what seems to be a deserted island - and later turns out to be Mutsumi's family's backyard.
To thank them for taking her home, Mutsumi gives Naru and Keitarou one of the hot spring turles - Tama-chan. Because of this, the other residents of Hinatasou use to call her the turtle girl.
Some time later, Mutsumi moves in at an apartment near Hinatasou. Since that time, she uses to study together with Naru and Keitarou.
Mutsumi could be Keitarou's childhood love, too. When she was little, she used to play at Hinatasou together with Keitarou and Naru. That Liddo-kun stuffed animal that Naru has in her room was a present Mutsumi gave her back then.
Finally, Mutsumi is a very easygoing person with not a care in the world. Though it may look different from her being clumsy and forgetful, she is quite smart, too. She also seems to have the ability to communicate with Tama-chan.
Mutsumi just loves water melons. In fact, a bag of melons is all she brought along from her home to her new apartment.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-shinobu.gif
Shinobu is a junior high student and actually not supposed to live at a dormitory at her age.
She became a resident of Hinatasou when her parents got divorced and each of them wanted to move to another town with Shinobu. Shinobu, however, didn't want to move at all...
Keitarou and the girls could finally convince Shinobu's parents that it would be ok if she lived at Hinatasou.
Since she is very good at cooking and housework, she usually does the cooking for all the residents.
Shinobu is a very shy, quiet and caring girl with a secret (but rather obvious) crush on Keitarou. Nevertheless, she is aware that Keitarou likes Naru, and she wouldn't even think of coming between them. Keitarou being happy is the most important to her.
Kaolla is probably Shinobu's best friend. Shinobu has a strong sense of responsibility, and so she is often shocked by Kaolla's crazy ideas and plans. However, since Kaolla is bursting with energy, Shinobu has no choice but to give in to her. On the other hand, Kaolla is just perfect to keep the often sad Shinobu in a cheerful mood.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-motoko.gif
Motoko is the youngest daughter of the Aoyama family. All women of the Aoyama family have been great swordsmasters since ancient times. And so is Motoko, though she isn't a real match for her older sisters yet.
The Aoyama family owns a Dôjô in Kyoto. In ancient times, they used to fight against demons, and developed several secret techniques and exorcism methods.
Since all of Motoko's sisters got married before, it would have been Motoko's duty to carry on the Dôjô. But since she didn't feel that she was ready for it yet, she went to Tokyo and now lives at Hinatasou.
All Motoko is interested in is the sword and the Warrior's Path. Or so she says. Much to her own annoyance, she has developed kind of a crush on Keitarou. Since it appears to be a weakness to her, she would never admit it. In fact, she even kind of hates Keitarou for her having a crush on him. So Keitarou gets beaten up by her or swept away by one of her secret techniques all the time.
Motoko's real weakness, however, is turtles. She is afraid of turtles for unknown reasons. Too bad Tama has developed a special liking to her...
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-mitsune.gif
All Mitsune wants in life is to have as much fun as possible. For that reason, she loves to set up other people in situations that could get... interesting.
Her main target is probably Keitarou since through his naivety he's easy to talk into things.
However, Mitsune isn't a bad person. Though her schemes get out of hand sometimes, she never intends hurting people or something like that. In fact, all her scheming with Keitarou and Naru over all aims at getting the two together.
Mitsune is probably Naru's best friend, they've known each other since high school. Back then, she also gave up her crush on Seta when she learned that Naru liked him, too.
It's not clear what Mitsune actually does for a living. She's a lazy bum and actually hates to work.
Sometimes she manages to drain some money from poor Keitarou who usually hasn't enough money for himself.
Mitsune's love for schemes probably inspired her nickname: Kitsune (fox). That sly expression of hers also looks quite like that of a fox.
She also likes to drink. She's never out of Sake and just loves to party whenever possible.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-suu.gif
Suu is a very cheerful and funny girl, always hungry, head full of weird ideas. She is bursting with energy, which makes keeping control of her quite difficult. Motoko is merely the only one who can keep up with her.
Shinobu and Sara are Suu's best friends.
She seems to be coming from a small jungle kingdom near India, but details are unknown. Her brother, who looks just like Keitarou, is the prince of that country.
It's not known why Suu is living in Japan. Probably for educational reasons.
Suu is a tech wizard. She invents and builds robots and all kinds of weird devices in her room, like Mecha Tama, the Dream Vision, the Turtle Radar, a Power Suit etc.
Her inventions always have a kind of ancient look and feel to it, somehow like an ancient indian temple statue. The devices are usually marked with a three-eyes symbol.
Suu's room is quite unique. It's like a small jungle, with even a pond that is connected to the hotsprings. Suu likes to sleep on the branches of a tree next to that pond.
Though Suu likes just any kind of food, bananas are her favorite. She likes them even more than Mutsumi likes watermelons.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-haruka.gif
Haruka is Keitarou's aunt and owner of Hinata Cafe, a small restaurant near Hinatasou. She sometimes comes to Hinatasou to take a bath in the hot springs.
In summer, Hinata Cafe uses to move to the beach, and the girls from Hinatasou help out as waitresses there.
Years before, Haruka used to study and work with Seta. They even dated, but Seta was more interested in his excavations back then. When he left the country on an expedition, Haruka abandoned him.
Being back in Japan, Seta tries to get together again with Haruka. Though she acts angry at first and throws away the ring he gave her, they get along well later.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-seta.gif
Seta is a professor for archeology at Toudai. Keitarou uses to work for him part-time, re-arranging broken artifacts (which are broken again right away by Sara).
Most of the time, Seta is busy with excavations all over the world. His main interest seems to be the lost turtle civilization. Through his working with Seta, Keitarou finds out that he likes archeology a lot as well.
During his time as a Toudai student, Seta was Naru's tutor. She had a crush on him since then, and promised to him to get into Toudai. Ever since, she has been studying hard.
Seta also used to study and work with Haruka earlier. They even dated each other, but since Seta seemed to be more interested in his excavations, Haruka abandoned him when he left on an expedition outside Japan for years.
Anyway, recently the two of them are getting together again.
Besides, Seta is an exceptional martial artist who was even able to defeat Motoko. It's not known where he got these skills from. However, during his time tutoring Naru, he teached her some martial arts, which is probably the reason why she can deliver such powerful punches and kicks.
Seta is also an exceptional driver - an exceptional bad one. He always crashes that van he's driving, but never gets hurt seriously.
Seta is taking care of Sara, also. Her mother, a friend of him from college times, passed away. Sara uses to call him "Papa", though he isn't her real father.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-sara.gif
Sara is the daughter of a college friend of Seta. Since her mother passed away, Seta is taking care of her, taking her along on excavations and everything. She uses to call him "Papa", though he isn't her real father.
When Keitarou started working for Seta, Sara became very jealous because she didn't want anyone else to work with him. So she wrecked the artifacts that Keitarou was rebuilding, and caused all kinds of trouble for Keitarou. Because she is very cute, no one would believe she could be such a brat.
Anyway, after a while, she got used to Keitarou being around. Which doesn't mean she won't cause trouble to him.
Since Seta is so often on excavations and expeditions, he asked Keitarou to let her live at Hinatasou and keep an eye on her, and Keitarou agreed to that.
Sara is best friends with Suu, since she is about as crazy and lively as herself.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-tama.gif
Tama is one of the rare Flying Hot Spring Turtles. Mutsumi gave Tama to Keitarou and Naru to thank them for taking her home.
Mutsumi seems to be able to somehow communicate with Tama.
Tama has developed a special liking to Motoko. Bad luck for her, since Motoko has a fear of turtles.
Suu would really love to eat Tama, she's very curious how turtle soup might taste. The other girls usually rescue Tama before she can gulp him down, though.
Also, Suu has constructed a series of Mecha Tamas, to battle with the real Tama.
http://scifi.pages.at/anizone/LoveHina/c-others.gif
Kentarou Sakata: A rich guy who is after Naru. At the time when Naru was an Idol Singer, he posed as her manager. When Naru finally didn't want to be a singer any more, he lost a lot of money and has now to work part-time at Hinata Cafe.
Nyamo: A native of Pararakels Island, she is the daughter of an archeologist who once worked with Seta. He later disappeared during an expedition and is lost ever since.
Nyamo is very shy and doesn't talk to anyone. She likes Keitarou very much, though.
Haitani and Shirai: Keitarou's classmates from high school. They failed their entrance exams like he did, and are living on part time jobs.
Urashima Kanako: Keitarou's sister (they're not related in blood, though). She has loved him very much since childhood days, and hated the girl from the promise even more. In her opinion, the promised girl has ruined Keitarou's life.
Kanako is a very complicated person that is not easy to deal with.
She is a master of disguise who can turn into just anyone. Also, she has some awesome athletic skills, making her one of the few people who can dodge Motoko's sword.
Liddo-kun: A stuffed animal, apparently from an old anime series. Naru has had one for a long time, it was a present from Mutsumi when they were children and played near Hinatasou.
