Sony to advance PlayStation 3 launch

Due to the stiff competition in the console market, Sony's president is suggesting that the company speeds up the development of their coming Playstation 3 console. The new console will focus on communications and broadband services, giving it the possibilities Microsoft's Xbox is equipped with today.

Only one year after the release of Sony's next-generation console Playstation 2, the follow-up to its giant success Playstation, the company admits plans to reschedule the development plans for the console series. Microsoft's new Xbox console poses a major threat to the Playstation 2, as it offers both a hard drive and ethernet adapter, as well as the giant's financial support.

"The biggest threat to the PlayStation 2 is that the Xbox changes the industry's life cycle," said Kunitake Ando, Sony's president and CEO, in an interview with Financial Times. Sony originally planned to let the life cycle of Playstation 2 equal the five years Playstation was available on the market. However, with the stiffened competition the company has seen in the past year, this might be harder than expected. According to Ando, he would recommend Sony to advance the launch of its next-generation console to early 2003 instead of the proposed launch date in late 2004 or early 2005.

This scepticism can't be found in an International Development Group report, where they forecasted the number of Playstation 2 consoles sold in North America to reach 34 million by 2004. The report also suggested a dead-tie between Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Gamecube, with both achieveing sales close to 20 million units. However, predicting the success of a console is a tough job, as a lot of factors come into play, so the predictions should be taken with a grain of salt.

Playstation 3, or the name Sony chooses to use for its next-generation console, is being developed by the company and their technology partners IBM and Toshiba. The development group operates with a $400 million budget, this to ensure the quality and performance of the final design. While there is little information available on the coming console, Sony has promised a chip design that focuses on communication and broadband services.
