Driver 3 is one of the biggest draws on PS2 for 2004. Developer Reflections is promising that Driver 3 will be even more hard-boiled than its predecessors, with oodles of gunplay and a darker plot starring Tanner, the grizzled undercover cop who starred in the last two outings.
Driver 3 re-creates the excitement of a Hollywood-style blockbuster action film and combines it with the adrenaline rush of an action adventure video game full of sinister criminals, nail-biting car chases, and international crime syndicates.
Reflections confirm that Driver 3 is based on an enhanced version of the Stuntman engine. Aside from basic optimisations, the updated engine now allows for vehicle doors to be opened and self-shadowing from the various vehicle parts.
There are around 70 vehicles you can drive - ranging from cars, vans, trucks, boats, and motorbikes - there is even a a fork lift truck and a fully articulated truck! You can drive around in the cab and when eventually you find a trailer section you can couple up - you're then in charge of a full 18 wheel articulated rig - complete with airbrakes and airhorn !
If you are into things nautical, Tanner will be able to commandeer a number of boats throughout the game - from power boats in Miami, cruisers in Nice and old Tug boats in Istanbul - one of the missions involves navigating the inside of a 200 foot yacht.
The game has a mission-based, linear approach to levels and one of the key changes between Driver 2 and Driver 3, is the way the missions can be tackled in multiple ways. You can expect an experience closer to the story-driven The Getaway rather than the freeform carnage found in Vice City.
Play in a number of modes. Take a Ride allows you to free roam around the city and do whatever you like. There are a few little 'games' in there to find but basically it's designed for a 10 minute 'destructive blast' The driving games allow you to jump straight into a number of quick chases, and checkpoint races. This also includes the "survival" mode with 4 cops against your own vehicle.
The storyline "Undercover" is the main mission of the game where Tanner goes undercover with his previous partner Tobias Jones and has to infiltrate a gang that are stealing cars and moving them from the US across Europe - ultimately to Russia. It takes Tanner from his home city of Miami, where Driver 1 started, through Nice and on to Istanbul, taking in dramatic changes in environment and road structure.
In Driver 3 you can get out of your car and steal other cars (as you could in Driver 2 of course). But the emphasis is very much on realistic TV/Movie driving, chases, and realistic car smashes. Driver also has a very realistic environment in terms of its look and dynamics.
Providing more than the single cities featured in other games, Driver 3 is set in Miami, Nice and Istanbul, with huge areas of each carefully recreated. Each city will weigh in with around 30 square miles including interiors to explore. There are 150 miles of drivable road (plus many back streets and alleys, and 31,000 individually placed buildings, so it's going to take you a long time to see everything the game has to offer.
Driver 3 will feature the voice talents of Michael Madsen, Ving Rhames, Mickey Rourke, and Michelle Rodriguez. The four will voice the roles of the lead character Tanner, his partner Tobias Jones, the leader of a crime syndicate named Jericho, and the sexy leader of a Miami car-theft ring named Calita, respectively.
Look forward to tyre-squealing chases and fierce on-foot firefights while tailing gangsters, chasing witnesses, stealing cars and unloading massive clips of ammo to bring the criminals to justice !
