hen it comes to role playing games, perhaps no title is held in more respect than Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII, which upon its release, almost single-handedly revived the genre and set a new standard for cinematic gameplay. When Square Enix announce that they were working on a DVD movie based on the classic game, gamers went absolutely crazy. Today I got a chance to sit down with Tetsuya Nomura, Designer for the upcoming movie, as well as Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories.
My time with Nomura-san began with some questions about Advent Children. Details about the movie have been harder to get than squeezing water out of a rock, but thankfully, Noruma-san did manage to divulge a few new details. First of all, many of your favorite characters from the game will be making an appearance in the film, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Barrett, Tifa, Aeris, and Vincent. Currently, there’s no word on Cait Sith or Red XIII. Nomura-san was cryptic in his overall answer to the question, saying that all your main characters from the game will “probably” be in Advent Children. As to what exactly constitutes a main character wasn’t addressed, but with the already extensive number of characters already confirmed, I’m hoping that Cait Sith and Red XIII at least have cameos.
My next question for Nomura-san concerned the strange silver-haired characters you’ve all probably seen in the trailers for the game that have been circulating around the internet. Surprisingly, he gave us the names of each of the characters as well as their unique personality traits. The leader of the group, Kadaj, appears to be the youngest of the group members. As a result, he acts a bit childish and immature. But, behind that immaturity lies an extremely evil and cruel mind. The second character, Roz, is the muscle of the group and during E3 was shown taking on Tifa in a fierce hand-to-hand brawl. But despite his strength and large size, he’s also the mentally weakest of the characters and is very prone to emotional trauma and is even a bit weepy at times. The last character, Yazoo, acts as the group’s lieutenant. Nomura-san was the most secretive about Yazoo, only saying that while he does look feminine in appearance, he is a male. Before we wrapped up that question, Nomura-san did hint at the fact that if you take a close look at the three characters, they all have the same hair and eye color of Sephiroth. Could these ruffians be the offspring of the evil warrior?
When quizzed about voice actors, Nomura-san divulged that Square Enix is finishing up recording the audio tracks for the movie. While he couldn’t announce any of the actors and actresses who would be lending their talents to the film, he did say that they’ve pooled together some great talent from a wide field of mediums. The movie will feature voice acting talent from notable anime actors and actresses, as well as those from feature films and those who provide voice-over dubbing when a Western film is released in Japan.
As we closed up our time with Nomura-san, the topics changed to more technical details. Square Enix is currently looking at providing some bonus content for the DVD release and are extremely interested in things like deleted scenes, character bios, as well providing a “making of” documentary. While they haven’t ironed out anything concretely, bonus content has been a priority for quite some time. Currently, the movie is slated to ship in Japan this summer, while a US release date is still up in the air. We’ll be bringing you the latest details from the movie just as soon as we get more details
