One of the hot developer to watch is Tecmo's idiosyncratic-but-ass-kicking Team Ninja. The development team is know for four things in particular: the acclaimed Xbox Ninja Gaiden, the equally impressive Dead Or Alive franchise, the titillating female figures found in both of those series, and the outspoken Team Ninja leader, Tomonobu Itagaki. Portable fans can now add a fifth element to that list: handheld gaming.
At E3 this year, Itagaki mentioned to a number of news outlets his interest and intention to develop games for both upcoming handheld gaming systems from Sony and Nintendo. When asked by the website Kikizo Games whether the new handheld technologies are tempting his interests in developing for the platforms, Itagaki responded, "Yes I do, and I will." Elaborating further when speaking with G4/TechTV on the show Pulse, Itagaki joked that DOA: Xtreme Beach Volleyball would be particularly suited to the Nintendo DS because you can, with the touchpad, you can ... interact with the female stars. He also expressed being impressed by the PSP technology base, and said that the system was created by those who know how to create hardware.
The typically candid and sometimes eccentric Itagaki is often known to speak with, shall we say, exquisite passions, so some may be reluctant to mark a date on the calendar for Team Ninja's handheld offerings until they see a project come into focus. However, those looking for it down in writing that the team is more than just interested in the new handhelds can find it on Nintendo's official site, where a Working title developed by Team Ninja can be found as one of the confirmed titles for the system -- whether this same project would come to both systems or would be, as indicated in Itagaki's off-the-cuff jokes, unique to each system is unknown at this point.
