There is a Skill Mastering System in the game, when the level goes up, you obtain skill points, special skill which corresponds to a particular skill can be learned once you have sufficient skill points.

For example, the hero can learn Boomerang Skill; Kukul the fencer can learn Metal Cutting Skill; Youngus can learn the Steam Ono Skill (beat the enemies by brandishing a big ax) and Rock Drop Skill; the heroine Jessica can learn the Big Snake Skill with her whip, where a snake of light appears from her whip and attack the enemies.

However, certain monsters can also use their own array of special skills when they become stronger.

Dragon Quest VIII also features a Monster Capture system, you can recruit monster companions, and form a special Monster Team. Sometimes when you finished a battle, the defeated monster flashes on the screen, and you can choose to recruit the monster in your team. You can choose to have the monsters fight for your team in battles, up to 3 monsters can battle at once.

During a monster vs monster battle, there is no command input screen, the monsters will fight with their own will, in the form of auto-battle. However you can set battle strategy for the monster team, ahead of the battles.

There is a Monster Battle League in the world of DQVIII, which is run by a man named Mori.
