What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis means "inflammation of the liver", and the most common cause is infection with one of 5 types of hepatitis viruses, called A, B, C, D, and E. There are also types of Hepatitis called F and G. The most common forms of Hepatitis in the United States are A, B, and C. Less commonly, hepatitis results from other viral infections, such as infectious mononucleosis, yellow fever, or cytomegalovirus infection.

Hepatitis can also be Non-Viral and caused by alcohol, drugs, medications, or poor blood flow to the liver. All of these types of Hepatitis can cause an acute disease with symptoms lasting several weeks including:

Flu-like symptoms

Clay colored stool

Yellowing of the skin and eyes or jaundice

Dark urine

Extreme fatigue

Nausea

Vomiting and abdominal pain. It can take several months to a year to feel fit again.

Information on the Specific Types of Hepatitis:

Hepatitis A:

is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Hepatitis A can affect anyone. In the United States, hepatitis A can occur in situations ranging from isolated cases of disease to widespread epidemics. One third of all Americans have evidence of past infection of Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B:

is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis or scarring of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.

1.25 million Americans have been infected with the Hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis C:

is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus or HCV for short, which is found in the blood of persons who have the disease. HCV is spread by contact with the blood of an infected person and unprotected sex. 3.9 million Americans have been infected with the Hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis D:

is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis D virus (HDV), a defective virus that needs the hepatitis B virus to exist. Hepatitis D virus or HDV for short, is found in the blood of persons infected with the virus.Rates are similar to the Hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis E:

is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV) transmitted in much the same way as hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis E, however, does not occur often in the United States.

The Hepatitis E virus comes in third, below A and B, in rates of occurrence. It primarily occurs in developing nations with inadequate environmental sanitation. In healthy populations, the rates are less than 2%.

Autoimmune Hepatitis:

is a liver disease caused by a genetic "glitch" that causes the a person's immune system to attack the body's own liver. The symptoms of this type of Hepatitis are the same as Viral Hepatitis

Autoimmune Hepatitis affects more women- 70% than men- 30% and occurs mostly in women age 15 to 40.

Alcohol, Drug, Medicine, Chemical Induced Hepatitis:

is a liver disease caused by taking in too much of a toxic chemical, toxic medicine, alcohol or other street drug. The symptoms of this type of Hepatitis are the same as in Viral Hepatitis.
