if u want to hack the root or to changethe root passwd without knowing the initial passwd so learn that way::33:

from boot or from the starting of linux booting shell press a then wait till u have the command line and write after a space single and waite till the command line and type su now u r a root so type passwd to change the root password

this occures only if you are using grup
if you using lilo no proplem
to protect grup from such attack with a password :
open /boot/grub/menu.lst (as a root)
type on the top of the file
password --md5
then copy your password from /etc/password and but it after a space
