Buried deep in last week's financial report from Eidos, which painted a dour picture of the company's fiscal health, was one shiny golden nugget: strong indication that the next Tomb Raider title will come to the PSP and the next Xbox system.
The first tidbit was nearly lost in the report's "Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology" section:
"Management is optimistic about the prospects for the PSP market and is already looking to bring a number of our key franchises onto this new platform, including the next iteration of Lara Croft Tomb Raider."
Adding oomph to the news, later in the report, as part of explaining the delay of several titles (Hitman: Blood Money, 25 to Life, and the next Tomb Raider, for instance), Eidos comments: "This will enable further development work to be undertaken on these titles (including additional versions of Lara Croft Tomb Raider for the next generation PSP and Xbox 2 platforms)."
Interestingly, this is the first time Eidos has specified consoles for the new Tomb Raider game, though of course everyone has assumed the PlayStation 2 is a shoe-in.
Eidos now expects the next Tomb Raider to appear in fiscal 2006, which means in the year beginning this July. Unfortunately, the company hasn't said anything more so far, though we'll be here with updates as they come in.
