السلام عليكم

April 5, 2005 - Last week, when Namco Hometek announced Soul Calibur III's exclusivity to PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube owners scratched their heads in wonder. Using exclusive appearances by Legend of Zelda's Link and Todd McFarlane's Spawn in the Cube and Xbox versions, respectively, Namco made each version exclusive and unique. More convincing, however, was how many Cube versions sold thanks to that singular appearance (upward of 1 million units).

But there is hope for Microsoft and perhaps even Nintendo fans. A Namco spokesperson told IGN that the Soul Calibur series will come to next generation systems.

"Namco is definitely planning to develop the SOULCALIBUR series on the next-generation platforms," Namco told IGN. "However, when we started development for SCIII, the specs for the next-generation platforms were not set, and there were no dev kits, which ultimately lead us to development on the PS2."

The reasons Namco didn't bring its top-tiered fighting game to other systems are reasonable, making perfect financial sense: There are simply more PS2s than Xboxes or Cubes in the market. The spokesperson didn't clarify whether that meant SCIII or SCIV would come to nex-gen systems.

"Essentially, Namco wanted to create a game with even more content than in Soul Calibur II, so we made the choice to focus on a single platform," a Namco spokesperson told IGN. "And when we thought about choosing a single platform, we wanted it to be on the platform that has the greatest penetration in the current marketplace, that being PS2. Namco is very excited about bringing SCIII to the PS2 and the team has worked very hard on maximizing the graphics for SCIII, which think will please franchise fans."

What Namco didn't say is that it may spend additional time tightening the controls and balancing the characters of this third iteration of the series. Soul Calibur II felt oddly balanced relative to Soul Calibur on Dreamcast, and simple button mashing, plus the simplicity (read: cheapness) of the exclusive characters dampened its overall feel.

Namco would not reveal further information on which next generation systems it means, but you can bet Xbox 360 is one of them. We'll have more come E3.
