Bomberman Online
Lots of new screens and new movies of the different gameplay modes!
September 21, 2001
It's rare nowadays to find a game with deep roots in the video game industry. When I say deep, I'm talking about games featured way back during the 8-bit console years, games like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Shinobi, Zelda and a handful of others. We've lost many classic titles due to poor translations to the 3D world (i.e. Blaster Master), and some that just phased out completely (i.e. Alex Kidd). But there's one game that has survived nearly every test of gameplay longevity, has been featured on nearly every console, and even though the gameplay hasn't changed much since it was born, Bomberman is still a no pun intended blast to play. And we can't send our beloved Dreamcast away without having the explosive mayhem of Bomberman Online.
Now before I continue on, there's probably a small, miniscule percentage of our dear readers that have never heard of Bomberman, so for those ignorant minority, allow me to enlighten thee. The premise is very simple: blow up your opponent by either setting off a bomb right next to him or force him to run into another bomb explosion. All the action takes place from an overhead view on a rectangular playing field that is littered with blocks. Bombs are both tools and weapons, as you must first blast your way through the blocks in order to deliver explosive fury on your enemies. Additionally, the blast zone of a bomb isn't an "area effect dome" but rather explodes out in four basic directions. Of course, you'll get various power-ups including rollerskates (to make your move faster), the Kick Option (allowing you to kick your bombs across open paths), and the favorite tool of the true Bomberman, the Power Glove. As simple as it sounds, the tactics are numerous as well as the skills needed; you must be aware of the timing of the explosions, how far the blast zone reaches, and the placement of both your bombs and the opponent's. Traditionally a 2D game (in both gameplay and visuals), Bomberman also went the way of 3D in Bomberman 64 and even ventured into a kart-styled game, Bomberman Fantasy Race. While those two aforementioned titles were fun (well, sorta), there's nothing quite like the tried n' true frantic action of classic Bomberman.
There are Bomberman purists that will question what type of Bomberman game format the Dreamcast version will follow. In case you didn't know, the school of Bomberman is divided into two main branches: those that hail for the classic 4-player simplicity of SNES Super Bomberman 2 and those that love the crazy features, 10-player madness, and "dinosaurs" to jump on of the last SEGA incarnation of the game Saturn Bomberman (yes, I know there was a Netlink edition). Yes, there's the occasional freak of nature that insists Bomberman 64 rulz the world and we generally throw them in the same cell as the hardcore Tattoo Assassins players. So what sides does Bomberman Online walk on? So far, a little of both as the E3 demo version only allowed four players to battle it out and so far, and no dinosaurs have been spotted, but the game featured a ton of play modes - Hyper Bomber, Submarine Attack, Panel Attack, and Battle Royal. While the game is still planned to have 10 player multi-player support online, that might change to just the classic four.
The game still features the classic overhead perspective so it plays exactly how we've come to expect with every Bomberman game. The look of the characters is, however, a bit different. Using the cartoony "cel shading" technique seen in Jet Grind Radio, it gives the game a distinct 3D look. Personally, this is probably the prettiest Bombmerman game I've ever seen; backgrounds are bright and full of color, character animate very well for the most part, and there are some interesting "special effects" that are hilarious. The animation of certain the characters needs some tweaking, especially in the "bomb throwing" animation.
However good the visuals are in Bomberman Online are inconsequential to the most important matter: gameplay. No need to worry folks as Bomberman Online delivers the same addictive action. Controls are very responsive and the collision detection is very good; in a few past Bomberman games, you could have your character's foot get caught in a blast zone and you wouldn't die. Not so in Bomberman Online so you better make sure your bomber is safely and completely behind a wall when a bomb explodes nearby. Classic power-ups like the Power Glove, Kick Option, and Flame are here, as well as some of the newer classics like the unpredictable Jelly bomb. There are also the penalty power-downs including the "skull" icon, only this time, you literally wear a large purple skull that slows down your bomber. You'll definitely want to check out the screenshots and movies we've provided below and while our preview version can't come any sooner, we'll make sure to give you all the new details regarding online play and the fresh "Create-Your-Bomberman" feature. Till then, we'll have to wait timer to stop ticking on this one.
