Tecmo's photographic horror series returns in its slickest and scariest incarnation yet.

Over the course of the current generation, Tecmo has gradually increased its prominence as a publisher. A lot of that rise can be attributed to Team Ninja's work on Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. What can't be ignored, however, is the spooky Fatal Frame series, which has brought the disquieting, psychological Japanese horror of the movie world to PS2 and Xbox gamers. Since 2002, when the first game hit the U.S., Fatal Frame has stood as a unique piece of the genre, not quite touching the same segment as Resident Evil's zombie gorefest or Silent Hill's creepy Americana. Fatal Frame III looks to be the creepiest, and visually strongest game in the series yet.

As the game begins, rain pours on the pavement of a winding road. The camera pans up, and we see that a car has crashed through the guardrail and lies upside down in a ditch. A beautiful young woman crawls from the wreckage, only to turn back and see that her boyfriend lies dead in the remains of her vehicle. She cries out his name, Yuu ... this girl is the main character of Fatal Frame III. Her name is Rei, and she's (appropriately enough, as the game has you combating ghosts with a mystical camera) a photographer by trade.

The next scene shows Rei taking pictures of an apparently abandoned building -- she complains that they aren't turning out interesting enough. That's because she'd heard rumors that the building was haunted and isn't seeing any evidence. Of course, she speaks too soon ... because she sees something she wasn't expecting: the ghost of Yuu. She follows him, and suddenly finds herself transported to a decrepit old Japanese mansion. The ghost of a young girl invites Rei to "stay here ... forever."

At this point, you're in control; the game slides seamlessly back and forth from cinemas to gameplay in a very slick way. Following Yuu, you'll encounter a spirit that attacks you, with no choice but to run. You'll be subjected to a vision of Rei being crucified to the floor in a bizarre ritual, with black bruising and tattoos consuming her flesh. It goes without saying, at this point, that this is a severely creepy game.

After this disturbing vision, Rei returns to the real world. Examining the photo she took, she sees that it's definitely Yuu. She begins to wonder what's happening ... and discusses it with her assistant, Miku. Those of you who played the first game will recognize that name; she was its heroine. More interestingly, it turns out that Yuu's been corresponding with the uncle of Mio and Mayu, the two girls from Fatal Frame II, about bizarre rituals (like the one that game centered around). In short, Fatal Frame III somehow ties together the disparate storylines of the entire series. The game's director, Makoto Shibata, told us that he has researched every aspect of Japanese horror and has worked them all into Fatal Frame III. It's easy to believe from what I've seen so far.

When Rei dreams, she enters a nearly destroyed, old-style Japanese mansion (similar to the locations from the other Fatal Frame games.) Rendered in sharp detail by the PS2, every ruined cabinet or locked room seems to hold a secret. Though the plodding gameplay of a horror game usually becomes irritating, everything in Fatal Frame III is so foreboding that I didn't mind how slowly Rei explored this world, flashlight clutched in her hand. What's also worth noting is how immediately interesting the game is: there's no boring tutorial, and the mixture of cinemas and gameplay keeps you from having to suffer through nonsense. You really get your hands on the game almost right away.
