I put on earphones and took the same test. Which is quieter? The Buick Lucerne, which goes on sale later this fall, or the 2005 Lexus ES 330. The operating conditions in the recordings varied from rough concrete at 35 mph to dry, smooth asphalt at 70 mph. I marked my preference for "vehicle A," which turned out to be the Lucerne
The difference was dramatic, in part because the engineers have tuned the base Lucerne CX to have a silent exhaust note, the windows are sheathed in laminated glass and the tires have a tread pattern designed to cut road noise
The Buick engineers said they would like to take a version of their sound lab to dealerships, so consumers could hear the difference
