XE: Even though Jade Empire is a great game, a lot of people (including myself) have accused it for being to simple at times. How much more depth will we see in Mass Effect, and will the player have the ability to change the difficulty?

Ray: BioWare defines role playing games as those games with a core of significant story and character development. Additionally, we believe a number of other critical RPG features such as exploration, strong player rewards and progression systems, and some type of combat also significantly contribute to the role playing experience. Mass Effect has a number of very strong role playing elements that we believe place it solidly in our – and our fans’ - definition of a role playing game!

Like Jade Empire, Mass Effect is an action RPG, and our third new intellectual property in development (the second is the epic RPG Dragon Age for PC), so we are benefiting from the knowledge we gained in creating both the Jade Empire and Dragon Age worlds and from our understanding of merging action features with role playing that we gained in developing Jade Empire.

Right from character creation in ME, where the player has detailed control over his or her character’s facial features, it is apparent Mass Effect is first and foremost a solid role playing game. In addition to physically choosing and customizing the lead character in the game, Mass Effect allows for tremendous character customization via traditional role playing game features like the player’s physical representation reflecting the character’s equipment at any given time and via control over the character’s stats, choice of character class and assignment of unique powers.
Even though combat is action oriented, Mass Effect is a squad-based game where the unique classes and abilities of your squad will have a significant effect via different combat tactics on the outcome of every battle. We’ve had difficulty settings in almost all of our past games, so while we don’t have any details to relate on that yet, the odds are good :)

The choices you make in selecting characters for your squad and how you develop and equip those characters will give you a significant advantage, if you make the right choices! We’ve also got some pretty cool innovations in non-linear storytelling planned for Mass Effect – we’re really striving to push the art form of RPGs to a new level. In the usual BioWare tradition, Mass Effect features a rich and engaging storyline in which the player determines the fate of humankind in the galaxy. Finally Mass Effect features a rewarding range of options for exploration including the Uncharted Worlds in which players scrounge for ancient artifacts on long-forgotten and inhospitable worlds.

XE: Speaking of Jade Empire, the Jade Empire game seems pretty well received by critics and gamers alike. Will Bioware be continuing JE at all? A rumor going around is that the game is that Jade Empire 2 is going to PlayStation 3, but that seems unlikely especially since traditionally Bioware only works on one major project at a time.

Ray: We don’t comment on rumors, but we can definitely say that Microsoft has been a great supporter of BioWare in the past on both Jade Empire and Mass Effect and we definitely look forward to working with them in the future – they’re a very good partner. And, BioWare definitely plans to continue the Jade Empire franchise – the Jade team did a great job with the first game in that series; we have great teams working on all of our games here. We’ve also said in the past that we’re working on not just one, but two Xbox360 titles. Enough said ;)

XE: Bioware has always had a huge presence with its fans, and the community at Bioware. Do you think it would be possible to go past the recognition of achievement and premium downloadable, and allow players to create armor or costumes to trade via the Xbox Live marketplace?

Ray: That’s a great idea. We have a bunch of very cool ideas in the works for Xbox360 Live, but we haven’t revealed any details on those yet…we’ll have more to reveal on this front soon! We have a great community at www.bioware.com, now numbering more than 2.75 million registered user accounts, and we definitely plan to continue supporting them in the future! We’re very grateful to our loyal fans – they keep us in business, and we have an obligation to continue to provide them games of the highest quality in the future.

XE: As I understand it, Bioware not only announced Mass Effect, but that the game is a trilogy. Is the main story for the entire trilogy already set out, and will we see all of these games within the Xbox 360 generation?

Greg: The enormity of the overall story arc in Mass Effect, and the huge range of features we want to deliver in the game led us to conclude that the only way to contain all the goodness is to spread it across three games. We already have a story arc for the overall series, and we have been plotting out the various features we’re doing across the trilogy – each game will add even more new and exciting things for players to do! Unfortunately at this point we can’t tell you what all of those things are…?

We do have a goal of delivering the entire Mass Effect trilogy within the Xbox 360 lifespan.

XE: A lot of the features and gameplay elements announced about Mass Effect sound very similar to KOTOR and JE. How will Mass Effect separate itself from past Bioware RPGs, and other RPGs besides the futuristic space elements?

Greg: Mass Effect will certainly be reminiscent of past BioWare RPGs, certainly in part because it’s being made by many of the same people that made our past games! The way to look at Mass Effect is that it is another step in the evolution of the BioWare RPG. Ray described how we personally define role playing games, and Mass Effect continues to extend this description. It is going to have an amazing story and characters, fully-voiced dialog (using a slick next-generation dialog system we have recently created), challenging tactical combat and some interesting Live features. All of these things will be different than we’ve done in the past, but you will be able to see their origins in our past games. It is also important to emphasize that Mass Effect will have strong and integrated role playing systems, even though it also has some very cool action elements.

XE: How is the experience developing for Xbox 360 from PC or Xbox?

Greg: The experience of developing for the Xbox360 isn’t fundamentally different from working on any other platform, aside from the fact that we’ve got considerably more horsepower than we’ve ever had before to dedicate to every one of our game systems. The end result is that the game will look better, have considerably richer worlds and even more interesting characters. For this generation I would really look at what we’re going to do with digital actors – the detail and realism of the characters we’re going to be able to create will be unparalleled.

XE: Visually what we have seen for Mass Effect is quite impressive, in fact on par with other next-generation titles like Gears of War. How long has it been in development using the Unreal Engine 3, and are the visuals just as detailed in one area as the other, or in some of the bigger areas, does Bioware become more “lenient”?

Casey: We’ve been working with this engine since the beginning of the project, and much of our work has focused on adding proprietary extensions that allow us to do some unique things with cinematics, dialog and digital actors. We haven’t yet shown the kinds of things our characters will be able to do, but it will be amazing. Our focus on advanced digital actors is paying off in some unbelievable ways. One interesting side effect of having extremely advanced and realistic characters is the sense of empowerment you get as a player when you create your character’s unique appearance, and that character ends up looking surprisingly real and is capable of very subtle acting and facial expressions etc.

Generally though, what we’ve shown as part of our announcement is just a teaser of things to come. We’re building a whole galaxy of aliens, creatures, and exotic locations – in addition to a sophisticated system for variety in the humans you’ll see in the game, including lots of different clothing and armor types. We also have a very sleek, futuristic architectural style to our environments that’s only hinted at in the released imagery. In short, we expect the final game to exceed the scope and quality of the few teaser scenes we’ve shown so far.

XE: How many characters will you be able to have at a time in battle, and how do you interact between these characters?

You’ll explore as a squad of three characters including your player character. In combat, you’ll be able to command your squad to use different weapons and tactics. They’ll fight alongside your character on their own, but you can switch over to control them directly if you want, or give them specific orders so that your squad can closely cooperate in battle.

Your characters also have a variety of combat skills that go beyond a typical shooter. Combat tech skills and a science-based form of superhuman abilities we call Biotics give some characters amazing alternatives to weapons.

Mass Effec

fully-voiced dialog (using a slick next-generation dialog system we have recently created),

Ray : we’re really striving to push the art form of RPGs to a new level.

Greg: Mass Effect will certainly be reminiscent of past BioWare RPGs, certainly in part because it’s being made by many of the same people that made our past games

Jade Empire :31:
