1. What is MidEast Crisis?
MidEast Crisis is a total conversion for the EA game Command and Conquer Generals : Zero Hour. It is a mod featuring Israel and Syria in a hypothetical modern war setting.
This is a non-political, non-biased mod, where no party is good nor evil.
Both factions have their own unique arsenal and abilities.
MidEast crisis also contains a new gameplay element where you battle for “Keylocations”. Enormous efforts have been made to provide an authentic feel to the project, including the traveling of several team members to Israel to record authentic Israeli and Arab voices and audio samples.
Accompanied by a soundtrack, which was recorded in a professional recording studio, MidEast Crisis is all about atmosphere.

2. Making Of
MidEast Crisis was a hard project, even though all the team members were experienced Command and Conquer modders.
First of all, we had a set deadline that was rather rigid. The whole project was to be completed in less than 4 months. The dead line was pretty tight, but we were assured that with the right motivation and hard work we would be successful.
We wanted the highest quality of original gameplay and a perfectly working AI, within the modding limitations of Generals.
There is no question that the demands for success were high and the time was short, especially when considering the addition of the ModToaster. Nevertheless, we went to work starting on creation of the needed design documents for both productions.
The appropriate people were hired and construction started. We started out building the mod using “PH-Models”, which stands for “Place Holder Models”.
These are extreme low-poly models which serve as a base for the programmers to work on.
This small, test-version of the mod, functions as a proof of concept. A lot of game flaws and technical limitations can be found in this stage even before actual construction starts.
This small investment of time and manpower, ends up saving time.
After this phase, adjustments are made to the design documents and the final construction starts
Halfway through the project, some team members visited Israel to record the authentic voices and various audio samples needed for MidEast Crisis.
As you can image we had a ball recording the voices. It was especially funny when we recorded people that had no clue what the game was about and what their text meant. Even after demonstrating the normal Zero Hour voices, people were still confused. Since all people in Israel have military experience, they were able to produce realistic samples. The best way to illustrate this is to listen to some uncut recordings we’ve made :
