Wrestling History

David Batista began his career training under Afa, The Wild Samoan in March 1999. He soon moved along to an Indy fed: World Xtreme Wrestling (http://www.wxwwrestling.com/), wrestling under the name Kahn. After a WWE tryout, Batista was signed to a developmental contract in March 2000 and sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling, (http://www.ovwrestling.com/) in Louisville Kentucky.

Almost nothing was known about the monster when he debuted in Ohio Valley Wrestling after being conjured up from the Ohio River after an occult ceremony conducted by Synn (http://www.ovwrestling.com/superstars/stables/dsprofile.htm). He appeared to be a monster, simply named Leviathan, nicknamed the "Guardian of the Gates of Hell" and a man who seemed to match his awesome description - huge, powerful and almost impervious to pain. He rarely spoke, instead protecting Synn and destroying all in his path.

Despite being a rookie to the sport, he was quickly seen as a big-time player and thrown into huge matches with the biggest and the best from WWE. During The Big Show's brief tenure in OVW, he was famously grounded by Leviathan's spear. He even battled Kane, though The Big Red Machine got the better of the Demon. In one match The Undertaker and Kane teamed to take on Leviathan and Diamond Dallas Page at 'The Last Dance' - the final main event ever at the Louisville Gardens on June 27, 2001.

The awesome Leviathan destroyed all in his wake and his amazing power finally paid off with championship gold when he defeated Doug Basham for the Ohio Valley Wrestling Heavyweight Championship. He battled all in his path, before being robbed in controversial fashion February 23, 2002 at the hands of Prototype and Bolin Services.

In mid-May 2002 Leviathan's manager Synn sold his contract to World Wrestling Entertainment's D-Von Dudley, where he now serves as a 'Deacon' to D-Von's unholy trinity. His work in OVW was far from done however. Synn ignored his request for an OVW Championship match, and punished him for disobeying her and growing a will of his own. She then cost him his championship rematch with Prototype on May 11 with a miscued fireball that sent the monster into a burning rage.

Leviathan garnered a measure of revenge in his last OVW appearance at Six Flags KY Kingdom on May, 31. There he lost a controversial match to Synn's latest monster Seven, but left both Seven and Synn down and out courtesy of a Demon Bomb from hell.

Now his attentions were turned purely to WWE, where he continued to accompany Reverend D-Von, holding his collection box. The collection box appeared loaded, as Deacon became a key player in D-Von's success, including the biggest victory of the Reverend's career, over Triple H!

It was the week immediately following the King of the Ring however, when the might of Batista was finally revealed. He took off the suit and donned the wrestling trunks to compete in a tag match with D-Von against Randy Orton and Faarooq. Batista was only in the match for a minute, delivering a clothesline and spine buster that left Orton down and out. The following week Orton found a new partner in The Big Valbowski, but the results were just the same.

Batista was dominant.

As the weeks wore on, Batista continued to team with D-Von, despite his growing discontent at playing second fiddle. Tensions between the two erupted in September of 2002. Batista's final SmackDown! match saw him giving the right Reverend a powerbomb before walking out on his contract.

During his hiatus, Batista's size and seemingly unlimited athletic ability caught the eye of 16-time World Champion Ric Flair. Flair and Triple H have taken Batista under their wing and are intent on grooming the young Superstar into a championship contender. Of course, their guidance doesn't come for free. Flair and The Game are more than willing to make use of Batista's athletic prowess and surly attitude to further their interests when needed.

March 2003 saw Batista sidelined with a tricep tear suffered at a Pennsylvania house show (http://www.batistaweb.com/joomla/articles/cursed.html). He is currently slated for a return this fall.

In October, Batista began rehab in OVW in route to a November return to Raw and Evolution. He ended 2003 by winning the Tag Team Championship, along with Ric Flair, from the Dudleys. Batista pinned D'Von for the win at Armageddon.

2004 started off as the Year of Evolution. Things fell apart when Triple H lost the title to Chris Benoit at Wrestlemania 20. Hungry for the opportunity, Randy Orton persued and won the belt from Benoit. Unfortunately for Orton, his win meant the end of his association with Raw's elite stable. Now a threesome, Flair and Batista spent the summer backing Triple H up in his quest to regain and hold onto the belt. As the year wore down, it was becoming obvious that Batista was ready to make his own run for the top. Evolution was in a state of turmoil with Flair trying to keep the peace between a threatened HHH and an increasingly confident Batista. Following an impressive performance at the first PPV of 2005, New Year's Revolution (http://www.batistaweb.com/joomla/ppv/nyr.html), Batista went on to win the Royal Rumble (http://www.batistaweb.com/joomla/ppv/rr05.html). As is the tradition, the Rumble winner automatically earns a title shot at Wrestlemania 21.

April 3, 2005. Dave Batista defeats his former mentor Triple H in the main event of Wrestlemania XXI. The next night, the new World Heavyweight Champion defeats former Evolution member, Randy Orton.

June 30, 2005. Batista is drafted to SmackDown where he begins a fued with JBL

Decked out in expensive shades, apocalyptic tattoos and dressing in slick suits, Batista has the presence of the World Heavyweight Champion, however get him angry and you will bare witness to “the Animal” being unleashed. Projecting incredible intensity and confidence, Batista is a thinking man’s World Heavyweight Champion. A fearless man of a few words, Batista makes those words count and backs them up in the ring with his raw power, twisting spines with the Batista Bomb.

Batista’s career took off when he joined Evolution. This move would be a defining moment in Batista’s career as this is where he met soon-to-be running mates Ric Flair, Triple H, and Randy Orton. The four superstars would team up to form one of the most dominating groups in wrestling history. Ric Flair played the role of legend, Triple H the leader, and Batista and Orton as the future stars.

Evolution was all about fine suits, gorgeous women, fast cars, and taking care of business in the ring. Batista quickly learned from Flair and Triple H, winning the tag titles with Flair in 2003. Despite championship gold, Evolution began to crumble when Triple H’s jealously over Randy Orton winning the World Heavyweight Championship led to Orton being dumped from Evolution. Triple H wanted to make a statement that he was the leader of Evolution and no one was going to take his spot. For Batista, this was a wake-up call. No matter how great he became, he realized, he would always have a glass ceiling over his head while in Evolution because of Triple H’s obsession with the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista stayed loyal, but he remained cautious.

In late 2004, rumors of unrest in Evolution surfaced, and toward the end of the year, tensions between Batista and Triple H became noticeable to the viewing public. The situation was pushed to the brink when The Game used psychological warfare to attempt to persuade Royal Rumble Match winner Batista to defect to SmackDown! and challenge for the WWE Championship — rather than remain on RAW and challenge him for the World Heavyweight Championship.

In resounding fashion, during a contract-signing session, Batista declared that he was staying put by sending Triple H through a table with a Batista Bomb. He then signed the RAW contract, pitting him against Triple H at WrestleMania 21. There, he would reach the pinnacle of sports-entertainment — thanks, in a large part, to his ability to power out of Triple H’s Pedigree finisher attempt.

After WrestleMania, Batista continued his momentum, defeating his rival Triple H in a rematch at Backlash and in a memorable and bloody Hell in a Cell match at Vengeance2005. In just his first few months, Batista had done the impossible by defeating the former World Champion and “Cerebral Assassin” Triple H in three consecutive matches – something no other Superstar has ever done.

In the summer of 2005, things heated up for Batista when he was selected as the last pick of the 2005 Draft Lottery bringing SmackDown! its champion after WWE Champion John Cena was drafted from SmackDown! to RAW. Unfortunately for JBL this came on the heels of what was supposed to be the affluent tycoon’s defining moment as the face of SmackDown!

However, with World Champion Batista on board, the championship controversy instantly ended, leaving JBL without the top prize. Over the course of the summer, JBL would go on to target Batista and the World Heavyweight Championship only for Batista to defeat JBL in a violent No Holds Barred encounter at SummerSlam before his hometown crowd in Washington, D.C.

REAL NAME: Dave Bautista

BORN: January 18, 1969 in Washington, D.C.

6' 6", 325 pounds

ALIASES/NICKNAMES: Kahn, Leviathan, Demon of the Deep, Deacon Batista

In a relatively short period of time, Batista has gone from simply being the fourth member of Evolution to being one of the biggest stars in the WWE and, with his victory at Wrestlemania, the WWE Champion.

Dave Bautista grew up in Washington, D.C. and worked as a bouncer in local bars and clubs. A meeting with Road Warrior Animal (http://slam.canoe.ca/WrestlingStarBios/roadwarriors.html) and Curt Hennig (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2003/03/06/37306.html) at a bodybuilding show in Minneapolis turned Batista towards a career in wrestling.

In early 1999, he began training at the Wild Samoans Training Camp in Allentown, Pennsylvania, led by Samoan Afa. A few months later, on October 30, 1999, Bautista debuted in Afa's WXW as Kahn, defeating Southtown Joe. He quickly rose to the top of the organization. At some point in his early career, Bautista was given a try out by World Championship Wrestling but WCW chose not to sign him.

Instead, Bautista headed to Ohio Valley Wrestling in July 2000 where he was dubbed the Demon of the Deep Leviathan (or just Leviathan for short) and became a member of the Disciples of Synn, which would also include the future Mordecai and Tyson Tomko.

After defeating WWE stars such as Kane, Val Venis (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingVenis/home.html) and the Big Show (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/bigshow.html), Leviathan won the OVW Heavyweight Championship from Doug Basham on November 28, 2001 in Jefferson, Indiana. After several months of defending the title, Bautista lost the championship to the Prototype (John Cena (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/cena.html)). Bautista demanded a rematch, but was soon on his way to the WWE.

He initially wrestled in the WWE during a dark match in February 2002. Wrestling as Leviathan, Batista (the WWE losing the "U" in his name) teamed with Brock Lesnar (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/lesnar.html) and the pair defeated Randy Orton (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/orton.html) and Shelton Benjamin. His first on-screen appearance in the WWE came in May 2002 as Deacon Batista, the bodyguard to D-Von Dudley (http://www.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBiosD/dudley_dvon_nov01-can.html) who was working with the Reverend D-Von gimmick. Batista remained with D-Von for much of the spring and summer of 2002, before turning against the Reverend and striking out on his own.

The break from Dudley also meant his departure from Smackdown. After several weeks of vignettes heralding a "Genetic Revolution", Dave Batista appeared on Raw, defeating Justin Credible (http://canoe.ca/WrestlingStarBios/justincredible.html). Batista soon earned the attention of legendary Ric Flair (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/flair.html), who helped Batista in his battles with Kane, including a victory at Armageddon 2002.

Evolution was formed in early 2003 when Batista joined Flair, Randy Orton (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/orton.html) and Triple H (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/helmsley.html) in a new super group that many people compared to the Four Horsemen. Evolution quickly made a name for themselves when they beat down Scott Steiner and later ripped off Kane's mask.

However, Batista was soon sidelined with a torn bicep in March 2003 during a house show match against the Dudley Boyz. Two months later, he re-tore his tricep muscle when he fell while jogging. It would be October before Batista returned to action, attacking Bill Goldberg (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/goldberg.html) to earn Triple H's bounty on the then-World Champion.

In addition to aiding Triple H in his feud with Goldberg, Batista also had earned the ire of Shawn Michaels (http://slam.canoe.ca/WrestlingStarBios/michaels.html). Batista lost to Michaels at Armageddon 2003 (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2003/12/15/288020.html) but at the end of the night, he and Flair had won the WWE Tagteam Championship, as a last-minute entry into the Tagteam Turmoil match.

After losing the tagteam titles to Rob Van Dam (http://slam.canoe.ca/WrestlingStarBios/rvd.html) and Booker T (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBiosB/booker_00jun18.html), Batista and Flair turned their attention to helping Randy Orton in his feud against Mick Foley (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/foley.html). The three members of Evolution joined forces to take on Foley and The Rock (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingRock/home.html) in a victorious effort at Wrestlemania XX (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2004/03/15/382634.html).

Batista and Flair regained the Tagteam titles the night after Wrestlemania but the title reign lasted only a couple of weeks before a loss to Chris Benoit (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBenoit/home.html) and Edge (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingEdge/home.html) cost Evolution the belts. After the loss, Batista began feuding with Chris Jericho (http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingJericho/home.html), defeating Y2J at Vengeance. Jericho and Batista would also clash again, in a Triple Threat match involving Edge at SummerSlam (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2004/08/16/585826.html), with the Intercontinental Championship in the balance. Despite Batista's best efforts, it was Edge who walked out with the title.

With Randy Orton ejected from Evolution the next night, Batista was now seen as the future of the group. Meanwhile, he and Flair would battle Chris Benoit and William Regal (http://www.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingNWA50/oct28_regal.html) in tagteam action. As a solid member of Evolution, Batista defeated Randy Orton on a September 2004 edition of Raw to cost Orton his chance at becoming WWE World Champion while Triple H held the title.

As the Survivor Series (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2004/11/15/723410.html) approached, Batista began to look towards a possible shot at the WWE title if his team were to win the main event. However, the team of Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Maven (http://www.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingArchive2001/may27_cal4-sun.html) and Chris Benoit won, which was the beginning of tension between Batista and Triple H.

That tension escalated on a weekly basis, with Batista accidentally eliminating Ric Flair during a battle royale and Triple H's mistimed chair shot knocking out Batista during a tagteam match against Benoit and Jericho. When the combatants were announced for the Elimination Chamber with the vacant World title on the line, both Triple H and Batista were included and things began to escalate, especially when Batista defeated Rhyno (http://www.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBios/richards_rhino.html) during a "Beat the Clock Match" and earned the right to enter the match last, rather than Triple H.

At New Year's Revolution (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2005/01/10/901074.html), Batista lost when he was eliminated by Randy Orton, although it appeared that Triple H could have helped save Batista from elimination, but chose not to. Triple H also did little to endear himself to his fellow Evolution member when he interfered in a Number One contender's match between Batista and Orton, causing Batista to be defeated.

No matter, Batista defeated WWE Tagteam Champions La Resistance to earn a spot in the Royal Rumble (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2005/01/31/915606.html). On January 23, 2005 at the Rumble, Batista eliminated John Cena (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/cena.html) and won the right to compete in the main event at Wrestlemania 21 (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2005/04/03/981377.html). After several weeks of uncertainty, Batista decided to stay on Raw and face Triple H, leaving Evolution behind.

Batista would walk into the main event at Wrestlemania the challenger, and walk out the World Champion. A month later, Batista defeated Triple H in a rematch at Backlash (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/PPVReports/2005/05/02/1021811.html) and then followed it up with a victory over the Game in a Hell in a Cell match at Vengeance. It appeared that Batista would rule the roost on Raw for some time to come.
