The success of the Xbox 360 Live Arcade has caught many people by surprise. One of the biggest supporters of the service has been Midway, having already released Joust, Gauntlet, Smash TV, and Robotron: 2084. At a recent press conference Midway announced that five more titles from the Midway archives are set to appear on Xbox 360 Live Arcade later this year.
First up is Defender, a futuristic side-scrolling shooter that will no doubt be recognizable to many an arcade nut from the 80s. Next is the 1984 classic Paperboy - who knew delivering papers could provide so many hours of entertainment? Most recognizable to the current generation of gamers will be Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, which is sure to bring back some fond, if somewhat disturbing, memories.
Also heading to the Arcade are Root Beer Tapper in which the player must ensure the customers get served, and Cyberball, a 7-aside American Football game where the players have been replaced by robots.
"We've been generally surprised by the response rate...the paid downloads are more than we expected," said Midway CEO David Zucker speaking to GameSpot. "It's not going to change our economic success overnight, but it's a nice little business on the side, and we're glad that people are happy with the product."
No specific release dates or prices have been announced for any of the five new titles, but we'll keep you updated.
