الاستعراض :

June 2, 2006 - Rockstar Games set out to create a "killer app" with Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/792/792359.html). To do this, the company needed to make something truly unique, something the PSP just didn't have in its fledgling library. The company found its answer deep in Liberty City, the setting of the first true 3D GTA game, Grand Theft Auto III. Rockstar would take a complex urban landscape and shrink it to portable form.

That's exactly what it did too. When Liberty City Stories shipped, no other title on the PSP platform came close to its level of depth and flexibility. It offered just about everything that GTA III had, along with a few new improvements made in subsequent chapters like Vice City and San Andreas. You could steal cars and take side jobs, explore the city for stunts and packages, and you could even play as a used-car salesman. Anything you could do in GTA III, you could do in LCS.... only now it fit in the palm of your hand.
But what about Grand Theft Auto fans that didn't have PSPs? For anyone without the system (or generous friends who loan them theirs), LCS sat entirely beyond reach. But now it's good news for the underprivileged -- Liberty City Stories is coming to PlayStation 2 next week and after a long period of not knowing what that meant, we're happy to confirm that it will include just about everything that made the handheld version compelling. Every mission, sidequest, and vehicle makes an appearance in here too; as do all the extras like hidden packages, stunt jumps and side jobs.

But now for a bit of bad news: the game's list of similar features ends there. The multiplayer helped the outstanding handheld game along quite a bit, but sadly, it isn't available in the PlayStation 2 version at all. Rockstar decided to remove the option for a number of reasons, including the fact that it doesn't exactly fit in with the story and spirit of Liberty City. Company reps told us that the reason Rockstar included multiplayer in the original UMD is because of the obvious nature of handhelds -- the wireless capabilities of the PSP helped the company design some quick, mobile-friendly multiplayer modes that just made sense on the platform
This time, Rockstar maintains that if it was to try and carry that feature over from the PSP edition, the developers wouldn't want to half-ass it. If the game is to do something cool, it wants to do it all the way or not at all (good attitude, we say!). Just to clarify, this omission of multiplayer includes any possible take on the two-player cooperative mode seen in San Andreas as well.

Anyhow, for those that need a little background on LCS, here's a recap: the story takes place three years before the events of GTA III and centers on Toni Cipriani -- a wise guy who has just returned to Liberty City after laying low for almost four years. He killed a rival mob boss, after all, and leaving town is simply the smartest thing to do. At any rate, he strolls into town and lands in the warm embrace of Don Salvatore Leone, who quickly places him under the command of "Capo" Vincent Cilli. From here, Cipriani embarks on a journey filled with murder, corruption, scandal and tons of explosions.

In terms of gameplay, LCS plays almost exactly like earlier iterations in the series, which is to say that it's very, very good. You can follow the game's storyline and interact with an impressive cast of shady characters, or you can just ignore the story and treat Liberty City like one giant sandbox. Of course, if you want to unlock all three islands that make up the big-ass metropolis, then you don't have much choice. Fortunately, the tale unfolds through engaging, well-directed cutscenes that you want to watch anyway. It's definitely one of the game's highlights.
