Hi there…That’s a good question…But you know…English is all about rules…We can't change a letter with another…It’s just like that…There is no "why" in English…It’s like you are asking "why" the clouds are in the sky not on the …groundIt’s just like that, you can't change it…And there is no answer for that "why” as I think so…That’s all I have I hope other members can help more than i did…Ciao... Its a nice question

but as we all know that The English spelling doesn't depend on how we pronounce most of the words

Each word has its own spelling and u have to know it not write it as its pronounced

some words can be written as its pronounced exactly but others dont

it sometimes depends somehow on how we say it
because in English ( cio ) is pronouced as sh
!and that depends on how we pronounce it

but something like thw word -lighter- we never pronouce the gh
cause they r silent letters in this word
;) and that depends on how we r knowing the spellin of this word
