With a number of high-profile and potentially excellent videogames headed our way over the next few months, the awaited "must own" PlayStation 3 era may finally be upon us. Highlighted below are most of the season's biggest titles, so be sure to look for them at your local retailer between the dual-21sts of June and September.

What to Expect: Moral choices and multiple story paths are all the rage in videogames these days, and those two concepts are at the core of Midway's alien sequel, Area 51. But what you do and how you do it isn't all there is to it. Blacksite also loves to flaunt its epic boss battles (which include enemies so big they dwarf entire military bases) and "Massive D" environmental destructibility that puts previous shooters to shame. Sure it may not have the brand recognition of a Killzone or a Halo, but don't underestimate it -- Area 51 could be one of this summer's brightest.

What to Expect: Following the acclaim of Chronicles of Riddick is a tall order, but the guys at Starbreeze Studios are attempting to do it with their comic book adaptation of The Darkness. Thrusting players into the mind of Jackie Estacado, 2K's anticipated shooter brings several cool things to the table. Non-linear storytelling, destructible environments, and several multiplayer options join the already-neat ability to control Darklings with a variety of powers. As an added bonus, PlayStation 3 owners get specialized Blu-ray content and Sixaxis controller support!

What to Expect: In a review penned earlier this month, our colleagues on the Xbox Team called Codemasters' DiRT, "One of the coolest racing games they ever laid their hands on (http://www.montada.com/)..." which sounds like a pretty damn good endorsement to us. In other words, the latest installment of the highly-popular Colin McRae racing series skids to the PS3 track with a multitude of off-road racing disciplines including buggies and up-hill climbs; Let's not forget the traditional rally racing, rally raids, multi-car courses and 4X4 competitions either. Of course, on the Xbox 360, the game looked absolutely stunning and the good news is that our early PS3 looks at the game point in that same direction. The physics system and replay modes are awesome too.

Sporting excellent animations, strong production values, and three completely unique fighting stances, Ninja Theory's highly-anticipated cinematic actioner is one of the hottest PS3 exclusives of the year. More importantly, it's been a lot of fun in the instances that we've played it thus far, and hopefully the death-dealing darling can keep that momentum going into her release.

What to Expect: Chow-Yun Fat and John Woo have teamed up once again to bring Inspector Tequila's next adventure to home theaters. But rather than follow the classic Hong Kong classic, Hard Boiled, with another movie, the pair has hooked up with Midway to create a game instead. And what a crazy game it is, what with its unbelievable gunfights, nearly total environmental destruction, and Hollywood-like production values. PS3 owners even get the added bonus of a "special edition" version that uses the Blu-ray's disc's extra space to include the original Hard Boiled film. Nice!

What to Expect: Factor 5 wants you to ride dragons and slay enormous lizards... and if you're going to do it, you might as well do it in 1080p. That's the big selling point behind Sony Computer Entertainment's first party actioner Lair. While that may sound rather simple, you shouldn't be deceived. In truth, Lair has the potential to become one of the biggest PS3 games of the summer. With its unique mishmash of Sixaxis controls, superb visuals, badass bosses, and its high number of different battle scenarios (including biological dogfights), this one could be HUGE.

What to Expect: Madden has yet to wow anyone with its last few offerings. That's going to change this year. EA is throwing everything and the kitchen sink into Madden 08. On the gridiron, you'll be witness to some brutal mid-air collisions. A price will be paid for going over the middle. Along with big hits, gang tackles, and an improved hit stick, Madden 08 sees the return of owner mode. Once again you can decide the financial fate of a franchise. The last two years have been a letdown, but Madden 08 puts the franchise back on track.

What to Expect: The Medal of Honor franchise has been around for quite a while. So long, in fact, that many gamers have stopped paying attention thanks to some less than thrilling additions to the catalog. Thankfully EA seems to have pulled itself out of the doldrums with a new take on the Airborne infantry drops over Europe during World War II. Aside from genuinely good visuals and fast-paced gunplay, Airborne's most interesting aspect is in the level design. Players won't begin stages in a set location but will instead be dropped from a plane above the level to land in any number of locations. This will create a number of very different scenarios for the player to overcome in any order. It's a new look for the franchise and, we're hoping, a good one.

Its kudos are deserved thanks to a number of necessary additions like true HD visuals, extra moves, overhauled weapons, bonus plot points, and an all-new playable character named Racheal. Don't miss it!

Built to be a realistic physics-based experience, EA's foray into skating is going to awaken gamers to new possibilities. Skate's open world and laid back attitude encourages gamers to spend hours touring the city and teaching themselves new tricks. You won't have to go it alone, as the fictional city of San Vanelona is packed with professional skaters looking to throw down challenges and pass along knowledge. If you've been waiting for something to break away from the Tony Hawk mold, Skate's a summer must.

What to Expect: Our UK and Australian counterparts have called Housemarque's high-def remake of an Amiga classic "the best PSN game to date," and its inevitable release in the States couldn't have us more excited. Though its premise is rudimentary (destroy absolutely everything you see), the method to carry it out can get nigh insane. Impressive visuals, multiple weapon power-ups and more varied environments than those found in similar shoot 'em ups like Geometry Wars and Mutant Storm have us salivating at the prospect of playing it.

What to Expect: Advanced Warfighter was a hit on the Xbox 360 and its sequel has been making waves over the last few months as well. In August, PS3 owners will get to join their own firefight when Advanced Warfighter 2 hits home. Once it has arrived, players will be able to customize their own experience with the flexibility of doing everything from picking an avatar and a vast new selection of headgear, to playing a deeper online co-op game and better-designed 16-player versus modes. All new gadgets and support teams enable players to control a land-based military cache, and they'll even be able to command jet-based carpet bomb attacks. Don't forget how pretty it is either.

Making the experience even more realistic is the all-new motion-captured animation engine and multiple invasion tactics, while the online multiplayer experience continues its role as one of the best and most immersive around. Players can even build and evolve their online persona -- getting better while unlocking new weapons as they go along, or use the Sixaxis controller to control their sneaky "Snake-cam."

What to Expect: This isn't what you think it is. Disney Interactive's Turok revival shouldn't be the slipshod mess that its predecessors were... not by a long shot. A new development team, a higher profile publisher, and a hefty budget already bodes well for the returning franchise -- but what's truly promising is the game's new high-level AI. Animals and enemies work in tandem to react realistically to the player's moves, and they can even get so caught up in the moment that they'll start fighting amongst themselves. The bevy of new weapons and sweet visuals isn't bad either.

What to Expect: Chances are strong that you're already playing Warhawk thanks to Sony's massive public beta, but if everything goes according to plan, it's just a taste of what's to come. An "online only" stab at the combat genre, Warhawk is one-part Battlefield and one-part Ace Combat. Its combination of killer aerial physics and sweet land-based bloodshed silenced early critics thanks to its fun and accessibility, while its superb graphical performance and kick-ass military atmosphere can't be denied.
