Create Your Own Xbox Soundtrack
Graphics, graphics, graphics, that's what's Xbox is all about, right? Not quite! With 256 audio channels, 64 of them in 3D, Dolby Digital 5.1, the Xbox is an amazing audio machine, too. Take advantage of that Xbox sound and cut your own personal gaming soundtrack, right from your own CD collection. Here's the scoop. You did know you can customize some of your games with your personal favorites, didn't you?
Using the Dashboard as a Mixing Board
The key ingredient to creating your own soundtrack is the Audio CD screen under Music on the Xbox Dashboard.
Of course the first thing you have to do is put an audio CD in the Xbox disc tray, otherwise you'll be creating a soundtrack of Marcel Marceau's Greatest Hits.
Now navigate through the Dashboard to Music, then Audio CD, and then Copy. See the Play, Pause, Select, Select All, and Copy buttons at the bottom. The game controller joystick/trigger functions as forward and backward controls.
Copy, copy, copy
Now that you're at the Copy user interface, select the tracks you want to save to a soundtrack. You can play, pause, select, select all, and copy, all from the Dashboard. Use the Play and Pause buttons to help you remember exactly which track you want to record. The Select and Select All buttons mark the tracks that you want to copy. If you want to copy all but one track, you can save time by choosing Select All and then use Select to toggle off the track you don't want.
With your tunes picked out, select the Copy button and the recording begins (at roughly three times the speed of real time—that's a 2:32 track recorded in 46 seconds). Before the Xbox starts copying the tracks to the hard disk you'll be asked if you want to add to an existing soundtrack or create a new one.
That's it! You've created a soundtrack you can listen to while playing games that support the Soundtrack feature. (Yes, pester your favorite game maker to install this feature - it's really easy!)
