Saffire

The full preview of Saffire with high-resolution prototype screenshots.

March 21, 2000

Her name is Priscilla. She's not exactly your ordinary girl next door. She's just as pretty as Lara Croft, only 10 times more powerful. It seems being the daughter of Greek god Zeus has its benefits.
Announcing Saffire (formerly known as Young Olympians), a unique Cube/PS2 title from developer Saffire (Bio Freaks). The third-person action-adventure, set to the backdrop of Greek mythology, represents the first time the game-maker has thrown off the shackles of working under a publisher and taken on the responsibility for itself. Because of this, and the fact that it has everything to lose or gain with the project, Saffire has been working feverishly to mold the self-titled piece of software into its most ambitious game to date. The idea, according to the company, is not to create a mere videogame, but a franchise -- a franchise that extends far beyond the realm of videogames into the much more mainstream world of television and literature.

Interestingly, Saffire (the software) started out as a Nintendo 64 project but the title was moved over to Cube and PS2 due to the advanced power of the systems. The developer's southern studio, also located in Utah, is hard at work on the game, which is running on an original backbone architecture tentatively titled SAGE and is designed from the ground up to be multiplatform ready. For the full story on the power of SAGE and how the software house intends to use it, we suggest checking out our interview with the design team by clicking right here. Read on to learn more about the game itself.

Saffire details the adventures of a group of young heroes based on, or in, the stories of Greek mythology. As the tale goes, in ancient times the god Zeus saw that the other gods were carelessly destroying the planet. To end this, he decided to seal off all of his enemies into the underworld, whereupon he himself swore never to return to the Earth. Centuries later, in modern times, a group of archeologists accidentally stumble upon the dangerous seals and open them, letting loose all the destructive gods of ancient past. Zeus watches from afar, but ironically, because he swore never to return, cannot do anything to stop the madness. Zeus enlists the help of five teenage gods to put an end to the chaos engulfing the planet.
Each member of the five-person team possesses superhuman abilities, due to the fact that they are all of god ancestry. Priscilla, the daughter of Zeus and leader of the group, for example, has full control over electricity and sound. The beautiful goddess can call lighting bolts from the heavens to burn enemies or malfunction electrical equipment. She also possesses master control of sound, meaning she can suck all noise out of an area or create a sonic-boom if needs be.

The game's other characters feature similar abilities:

Odysseus, the son of Apollo, has control over heat and light. The god can blacken rooms or blind enemies. He's also a master of fire, which enables him great powers in the way of burning enemies or objects up.
Melanie, the daughter of Hephaestus and Aphrodite, inherited all the sex appeal and charm of her mother. She's extraordinarily beautiful, but because she has been given the mind of her father, she doesn’t' realize it. Even as team members and enemies fall victim to her charms, she's too dazzled by modern technology to notice.
Damien, meanwhile, the god and product of a drunken love affair with Dionysus and Athena, is a musician who possesses the ability to project physical thought. In game terms, this means the character can conjure up his own weapons and devices that can then be used against enemies. He can also put enemies to sleep with his 'drunken' powers.
Lyssa, daughter of Hermes and the God Forethought, has inherited the super-fast speed of her father and the ability to predict the future of her mother.
Gameplay
Saffire is a highly original third-person action-adventure with fighting and puzzle elements. It's a game that has it all, really, and why not? This is to the first title to demonstrate the firm's advanced backbone SAGE. Utilizing it, the development team at Saffire is aiming for an end product that plays fast and smart, enabling gamers to interact with their environments like never before. To this end, Saffire (the software) employs inverse kinematics, an up and coming animation system that provides for on-the-fly reactionary animation that is always unique depending on the situation. It also features huge 3D worlds, a stunning framerate and levels that call for players to use different characters to achieve different goals. Running out into an open area and blasting away with character Priscilla's lightning bolts, for example, is not recommended. On the other hand, it could work to one's advantage to use Damien's drunken powers to put an enemy guard to sleep and then sneak past a location unseen.

Outlook
Saffire's self-titled action-adventure is being developed simultaneously for PS2 and Cube under the company's SAGE architecture, which was first demonstrated at 2000's Game Developers Conference. There is no question that this unique third-person game will be technically willing and able, but just how well it will ultimately play remains to be seen. Judging by the planned features list, including everything from five playable characters to a two-player cooperative mode, though, we're definitely excited. Look for it to arrive next year.

Note: The images we've provided are *prototype* screens of Saffire. This game is not running on Nintendo Cube development kits, as some publications have reported. It is, in fact, very early on and likely to change (and perhaps improve) in appearance before its release on PS2 and Cube in 2001.
