Dinosaur Planet Kisses N64 Goodbye

Sources close to Rare finally confirm that the company's 3D Zelda killer is a GameCube launch title.

February 27, 2001

In what is bound to come simultaneously as bad news for Nintendo 64 owners and a spectacular break for GameCube hopefuls, sources close to Rare have positively confirmed that Dinosaur Planet has been scrapped as a 64-bit game in favor of a release for Nintendo's next-generation console. The 3D action-adventure is scheduled to ship at system launch in North America later this year.
Though it has long been thought that Dinosaur Planet should make the platform switch because it would not get the attention it deserves as a cartridge release, the team working on the project allegedly fought both Nintendo and Rare on the redesign. Reports from those close to the product suggest that a final decision to terminate the 64-bit release and revamp the title for GameCube was not made until November of last year, just a few months after the August unveiling of the future console.

Exactly what content changes will ultimately be introduced to Dinosaur Planet as it transitions to GameCube are not yet known, but logic tells us that, at the minimum, the title's visuals will see dramatic improvements as 3D models are re-rendered and higher resolution textures applied. It seems safe to assume that speech and music samples will similarly improve to take advantage of GameCube's superior audio capabilities and greater storage medium.

Since Nintendo's own Legend of Zelda title will not be ready in time for a GameCube launch, it is highly likely that Dinosaur Planet will serve as its replacement. After all, it is an epic 3D action-adventure with nearly identical gameplay mechanics to Link's own right down to a similarly styled control scheme and item-based character building structure.

We have removed Dinosaur Planet from our Nintendo 64 release and previews directories and added it to our GameCube ones.
