When Nintendo first announced its GameCube memory card there were some typos in the press release, which sent the press and watching consumers into a frenzy wondering if the card was 4MB (megabytes) or 4Mb (megabits). The difference is quite substantial, as 4Mb is a mere half-megabyte. Much to our chagrin, Nintendo quickly clarified that the card was the latter, an almost laughable 4Mb, making it a mere 1/16th the size of Sony's and Microsoft's competing 8MB memory card standard. And, we're not even going to mention the monstrous Xbox hard drive.
At the time we questioned Nintendo's motives, but figured that the company knew what it was doing. The official Memory Card 59 from Nintendo holds -- as you might guess -- 59 blocks of data saves. On the average GameCube titles use anywhere from as little as four blocks to 20 blocks. That said, you're only going to fit 3-6 game saves at best on each card. How quickly it became apparent that the Memory Card 59 was an unaccommodating solution. Additionally, many sports titles and other data intensive titles use anywhere from 40 blocks to well over 100. Acclaim's All-Star Baseball 2003 uses nearly 300 blocks of memory for its in-depth franchise mode, making it absolutely impossible use the Memory Card 59.
Queue InterAct's Mega Memory 16x card for GameCube. The MM16x (the name's just too long to write repeatedly) features a total of 64Mb, which translates to over 1000 blocks compared to Nintendo's scrawny 59. It more familiar terms, this is 8MBs, exactly the same size as Sony's PS2 card and Microsoft's Xbox card. When we first got it into the office, we couldn't believe that it was perhaps possible to own a memory card that would be so efficient in comparison. We assumed that the MM16x was a grouping of 16 Memory Card 59s all in one, basically, where you would have to page through each card manually. This is absolutely not the case. The MM16x behaves as one, harmonious memory card.
