At least one survivor was reported walking around the crash site, said Lt. Col. Bryan Hilferty, a Fort Hood spokesman. The Black Hawk was carrying nine soldiers, all of them from the 10th Mountain Division, a Pentagon official said.

Further details on the conditions of those onboard were not immediately available.

A spokeswoman for Samaritan Health System in nearby Watertown said they had been told to expect injured personnel to be brought to their hospital.

The helicopter disappeared at about 2 p.m. and debris was spotted on the post by search-and-rescue teams about 1 1/2 hours later, Hilferty said. The area where the helicopter went down is covered with a couple feet of snow, and search helicopters and ground teams are aiding in the rescue.

"We saw at least one person walking around by the crash site," he said.

Hilferty said the helicopter was on a training mission with at least one other helicopter, possibly two, when "it just disappeared."

Noting that the Black Hawk is one of the best in the Army's fleet, Hilferty said "it's very surprising" it would crash in this manner.

Fort Drum, in northwestern New York, is home to the Army's 10th Mountain Division.
