The Necklace
By: Guy de Maupassant's
This story was written by Henri-Rene-Albert Guy de Maupassant. He was born on August 5, 1850, in France where he spent most of his early life. The oldest child of wealthy parents who eventually separated, Maupassant was not allowed to attend school until he was thirteen years old. Before then, the local parish priest acted as his tutor. After being expelled from a Catholic seminary school, Maupassant finished his schooling at a Rouen boarding school before studying law at the University of Paris. His studies were soon interrupted by the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. in this article, I shall tell you what I understand from the story " The Necklace". I consider it as one of his beautiful works.
My friend advised me to analyze this story because as she said it tells us that being honest is more important than self pride and position and other meanings. Actually the story didn’t tell us anything about the setting.
First I will tell you about the summery of the story then I will start to analyze it. "'The Necklace’’ begins with a description of Madame Mathilde Loisel. Though she is ‘‘pretty and charming,’’ she and her husband, a clerk in the Ministry of Education, are not well off financially. She has always dreamed of a life of leisure, with attentive servants and a large home, but her lifestyle is decidedly more modest. Ashamed of her social standing, she no longer visits Madame Forestier, an old school friend who has become rich.
When the Loisels are invited to a ball, Madame Loisel becomes very upset, insisting that she has nothing appropriate to wear to . The main theme or central idea of this story is that dishonesty results in larger problems. It is told by an omniscient third-person narrator, who refrains from judging the characters or their actions.
I will tell you first the summery of the story to help you to understand the topic. In Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace," Mathilde Loisel is the main character. Her husband gets an invitation to a ball, which gives her an opportunity to live her ultimate dream. Therefore, she gets a new dress and borrows a necklace. She ends up losing the necklace, which takes her ten years to repay. This circumstance causes Mathilde to undergo some changes through the ten years, and she is force to repay the loans back. Mathilde fantasies over a better life, but this fantasy leads her only to more of a lower class than she was. Mathilde only lets herself suffer because she thinks she deserves more in life than what she has, and her relationships with her peers contribute to this. That is a plot summary of the story.
I will tell you now about the some characters in the story and I will try to analyze it according of its part or action in the story. Mathilde Loisel is the main character in this story. She is a character who has much pride in her. she is unhappy because she feels that she married beneath her. Matilde's husband also does not correct his wife's faulty action. They both do not feel guilt. She and her husband, a clerk in the Ministry of Education, are not well off financially. The second main point is that Matilde is a dishonest character. When she loses her friend's necklace, she does not tell her friend the truth. "Madame Jeanne Forestier" She is a school friend of Mathilde Loisel, and she lends her the necklace that Madame Loisel wears to the ball. Madame Forestier's wealth has intimidated Madame Loisel, preventing her from keeping in touch with her old friend.
I will tell you noe some of the characterization. In the short story The Necklace the author uses Irony to explain the story. The kind of Irony used in this short story is a dramatic irony is when an audience percieves something that a character in the literature does not know. The way the author uses irony in the story is that Mathilde had thought that the necklace was worth alot of money meanwhile it didn't cost that much because it was an imitation. It made us think that the necklace meant alot to Madame Forestier. The symbol in this short story is the necklace. Madame Loisel a women who borrow a necklace (the most expensive one) from her friend Madame Forestier. The necklace was used show us the rich and famous and how nice it is. It is also used to show us greed in people and the consequences that comes with it. The author examines the theme of how learning a difficult lesson about honesty can impact someone for the rest of their life. The author also examines the theme through the use of his title, the characters who act out the events, and the plot. ‘‘The Necklace’’ is told by an omniscient third-person narrator, who refrains from judging the characters or their actions. the narrator simply describes the events of the story, leaving it up to the reader to determine the nature of the characters through their actions.
The discovery that forms the story's climax concerns the true nature of the necklace she has borrowed from her friend Mrs. Forestier. But this is perhaps not the most important lesson of this story.
Now I will tell you about the theme of the story. The contrast between true values and false values. "The Necklace," characters are taught many valuable life lessons. The main theme or central idea of this story is that dishonesty results in larger problems.
That is all about comprehension of the story. I dislike this story . The reason is the story’s implicit philosophical message. That message is that honesty is bad, that the world we live in is fundamentally malevolent, where any trivial occurrence could destroy one’s dreams and ambitions, and that it is better to just accept what one has, never aspiring for more.
