Shares in Sony dropped 3.63% on the Nikkei overnight amidst speculation that the launch of the Playstation 3 will shift from the spring of 2006 to late fall 2006 in Japan. In a research note released late last week, Merrill Lynch cited the delay and possible production costs of US$900 per PS3 console in their rationale to cut Sony shares from neutral to sell.Contrarian buy signal...
In Nvidia's earnings report last Thursday, the company reported that it didn't expect to record any royalty revenue from Sony for the quarter which closes at the end of April 2006. Nvidia supplies the RSX graphics chip for the PS3. Basically, this supports the view that Sony won't be producing any PS3 consoles between now and the end of April which bodes ill for a spring launch. A look at the healthy release roster for the Japanese PS2 this summer also lends credence to a later rather than sooner PS3 launch as developers continues to churn out current generation software:أفكر:
