DON'T PANIC, Ye doubters! Tomb Raider: AOD is absolutely fantastic!!!
Before you let your excitement turn to anguish after reading Gamespot's impressions, let me assure you that Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness blew me away and was everything I expected after so many depressing delays, and much more!!
YES: the controls take about 2 hours of getting used to.
YES: there are some serious lags when rendering massive landscapes with moving steam or other animations simultaneously which I agree should have been ironed out before release, but these are very few.
YES: the dead opponents' corpses blink and vanish after being killed (and should have remained onscreen for you to pick up or drag and hide) but that is easily gotten used to and ignored after a while, and forgivable considering how amazing everything else is.
AND YES: a few things seem inconsistent. But a little imagination is required (aparently the GS reviewer is lacking a bit here) to tell the difference between a locked and a swollen/stuck door in an abandoned tenement. And as for the crawling restrictions mentioned, every game I've ever played (the Resident Evil series is a prime example here) has areas that a real person could enter, climb over or maneuver through, but are simply rendered scenery and off limits to a game character to move the game along.
The gameplay is amazing. You get to collect tons of items for trade at a pawn shop, talk to lots of cool and distinct characters and choose your own questions and replies (and your choices REALLY DO affect the outcome of the encounter!!), go on lots of side quests and missions in a large area, and find hidden secret areas and such.
The graphics are nothing short of amazing. This is what Tomb Raider should have looked like all along. The ammound of detail you'll see in some of the alleys, offices and store rooms stunned me. I counted no less than 15 different types of box designs in one closet. And the different types of furniture and doo-dads in an office, or other room type are way more than even needed!
The story is keeping me on the edge of my seat, and very well-written.
And I'm only about 4 hours into the game!
BE WARNED! PEOPLE ARE GOING TO RIP THIS GAME APART!! BUT!!! Despite any of the flaming, hateful reviews you are going to read (and you'll read a lot. After all these maddening release delays, people are going to fly off the handle over a few little flaws that aren't even worth getting upset over and not give the game a solid chance to bedazzle) I think you'll be more than pleased with the results of TR: AOD. I forked over my 52 bucks, and completely and wholeheartedly feel that I got every pennies' worth already.
To the folks at Core, you more than made up for the long delays. I am very, very happy with this amazing, and VERY, VERY FUN game.
WELL DONE!!!
