Arsenal FC and Real Madrid CF have agreed a swap deal that sees José Antonio Reyes move to the Santiago Bernabéu and Julio César Baptista arrive in north London on loan deals for the 2006/07 season.
Reyes unrest
Spanish international forward Reyes, who played alongside Baptista at Sevilla FC in 2003/04, has made 69 Premiership appearances and scored 16 goals for Arsenal since his €26m transfer to the Gunners in January 2004. Capped 21 times by his country, the 22-year-old had been linked with a return to Spain since the FIFA World Cup finals amid reports he was unsettled in England.
Madrid disappointment
Baptista, 24, heads to Arsenal a year after he opted to join Madrid rather than the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League finalists. In the Spanish capital, the Brazilian international failed to recapture the form that had yielded 38 goals in 63 Primera División games for Sevilla, with the ex-São Paulo FC attacker netting just eight times in 32 outings. Both players are eligible to be registered for their new clubs' UEFA Champions League campaigns, Reyes having sat out Arsenal's third qualifying round win against NK Dinamo Zagreb.
