How to Spray paint Your Car The Kitkat Way

How to turn your car from this:

      to THIS!!

      http://www.psychopanic.com/images/carpics/pinkcar1.jpg
Easy - I just grabbed my magic wand and VOILA! (no I didn't - this took me two days of hell - however it was worth the effort!)
      Instructions:
You need the following materials before you begin your quest to change the colour of your car:
(most materials are in the below photo)
*Prices are in Australian Dollars as of March 2005

      http://www.psychopanic.com/images/carstuff2.jpg
Ingredients: (amounts etc may vary for smaller, bigger or different cars)

4 Litres of K&H Surface Primer Filler $53.65

3 Litres of Super Velox Q.D Agricultural Enamel (in your colour) $77.10

      • 250ml of U-Add Enamel Hardener $30.35
      • 4 Litres of Multilac Thinner $18.50
      • 5 Pieces of 80Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper (more smooth if preferred) $5
      • 2 Rolls of 18mm x 50m Good Masking Tape $4
      • 1 Goggles & Filter Mask Pack 2Pc Set $4
      • 1 Roll of Contact Paper ~$2 (I already had some)
      • Stanley Knife $2
      • Pair of Ear Plugs (if you have a super loud compressor) $0.60
      • 1 GMC Air Compressor $100 (however I borrowed my friend's one)
      • 1 Hose to connect compressor to spraygun $25
      • 1 Spraygun to Hose connector $7
      • 1 High Pressure SprayGun $50 (the most important tool you need!)
      • 1 Sander $25 (very handy or if you are lazy - not absolutely necessary)
      • Lots of newspaper (to cover your windows etc. with) Free - buy the paper!
      • Need Liquid measuring cups as well
      • TOTAL cost $404.20 (to save costs i hope you have friends with some of this equipment that you can borrow for mates rates)

Ok, now it is firstly advisable to park your car out of the sun, or under a carport like I did so that the weather elements don't affect your work (rain, hail & shine baby!)

      http://www.psychopanic.com/images/car02.jpg
Next, after you have cleaned your car free of dirt and grime and such, you have to do the boring task of taping all windows, handles, headlights etc with sandpaper so that your WHOLE car doesn't end up a new colour! Also, with my little car name label (ie. where it says Holden Astra SLE on my car), I covered that with contact paper and cut around it using the stanley knife. This task took me a whole FOUR HOURS (maybe I should have had someone help me do this oh well)

Next, this is where you have to use the Primer/Filler stuff. Get your spraygun out, mix 3 parts of Primer and 1 part of thinner, and spray the entire car (don't be
concerned if the spray doesn't come out very well).

This is the air compressor that I used (I borrowed this and the hose came with it too)
After you spray the first coat of primer on, wait for about an hour or so (I waited overnight because it took me the whole day to do all the above steps), then you can sand down your car. Repeat this step twice (ie. you need two coats of primer, and sand down the car after each coat). However, because I was just lazy, I didn't sand back ALL the primer down, the only important thing is that the surface of the car is smooth after you sand it.

Final step - After you sand the primer coat down, clean your car of all the dust and grime etc. (to make this easier, I just used the spraygun as an airgun to blow all the dust off the car). Now the FUN PART - when your car is free of dust, mix the 3L of Enamel paint with the whole 250ml tin of Enamel Hardener and put around 300-400ml of Thinner together (just enough thinner so that the paint is sprayable). Now, this is where you need the filter mask - you are working with 2Pack Paint here, so breathing it in is quite a bad thing! Get your spraygun, connect it up to the compressor, and spray two coats of paint on the whole car (wait about 10 to 15 minutes between each coat). **I got told later that I need a clear top coat, but I didn't have the top coat stuff, so too bad**
After the car is dry (I would wait at least two or three hours), it is time to take all the newspaper and masking tape off your car and WALLA! TADAAAA! you are DONE! Just take a good look at all the work you have done and be proud!

All this work took me two long 8hr days of hard work - and believe me - when you are finished, it is well worth the money! I have added years of life to my car presentation wise! Now the cops won't pull your rustbucket over all the time! Oh yeah, I didn't photoshop the number plates above that seem to be a holy bright message from god - it was just my camera that did that! Also, as a touchup, you should put some cut n' polish on the car as well to smooth the layers out!

Carnauba Polish, 240mm buffer, polishing buff (left), polishing cloth (right)
** I just bought myself a 240mm diameter buffer. It has a variable speed on it, and it was only $48 from Super Cheap Auto. I could have gotten the more expensive and smaller $150 one, but I couldn't afford it, so big and cheap will do me instead. I just buffed my car, and it looks pretty good considering that I did it at night with only one spotlight.
To use the buffer - first put the polishing cloth cover on the buffer tightly, then put some of the carnauba polish on the cloth and then use the buffer all over the paintwork (keep applying the polish when it runs out on the paintwork). When you have polished the car, put the lambswool/polishing buff cover on, and then use the buffer all over the paintwork just like you did with the cloth. That's all you should have to do to make your car shiny, clean and AWESOME looking!
THE END!! ENJOY YOUR BRAND NEW LOOKING CAR!
