      Okay here it is, Nihongo no shiken : level 2

      Be warned this is a higher level than before

      : Off you go

      Q1. 4x1points
      Write the following figures in romaji or in hiragana
      Most of them are a bit tricky

      278
      3600
      100000
      80000000

      Q2. 4x1points
      : Can you give the ~te form for the following verbs

      (iku (to go
      (oyogu (to swim
      (hanasu (to talk / to let go
      (yobu (to call

      Q3. 3x3points
      .Translate the following sentences to japanese

      Everyday, I go to school by bus
      I learn japanese from a Japanese teacher
      I wish to go to Japan and make/encounter japanese friends

      Q4. 5points
      Here it is, the most dreadful question in a language test : the essay ! bwahahahah
      Ahem...back to seriousness, for once I'm on the other side hehe...

      You have finally found a Japanese penfriend and now you are carefully preparing your first letter to him/her
      Can you give a few-sentence-long extract (not too long please ^^; I (hope the topic is not too broad

      : The 5points repartition is as follows

      2points for sentence meaningfullness
      If I can see a major problem it's 0.5 off. If the sentence is too difficult for me I'll make sure I ask someone capable to tell of it
      Oh and as you've guessed it, the essay needs to be at least 4 sentence long

      2points for grammar/particle/verb forms
      As you guess one more time, it's 4 goes at grammar before losing the (2 points (man I'm enjoying the teacher position lol
      I will count points off only if I feel the error needs to be fixed

      I reserve the last point for my personal appreciation (by now you (must really hate me lol

      I hope I will be able to adjust the difficulty level more efficiently with further tests

      ! Ya

      ! Toki chan, sassuga, always in the front line for challenges, gureato

      ^^

      Hmm from the looks of it this is going to be a good mark too let's see

      : Q1

      It's always a bit confusing to write in Romaji...10 should actually be written juu but I suppose this is not the problem here

      ("600is Roppyaku (with two "p
      Good for the san zen
      However the last figure was unfortunately bigger than that

      lol

      Remember the joke about the laid off translator

      actually 80000000 is exactly hassen man

      that is to say eight thousands x ten thousands

      and yes it's a hidoi trap but well I can't help how the japanese count high numbers

      (otherwise, it's happyaku like roppyaku with two "p" (just in case

      ^^

      I'll only count the figure conversion since this was the point : that makes 3 points so far

      : Q2

      Perfect score for this one

      Minnasan
      The ~te form is very important in the language, many constructions and word formations come out from it

      there is a trick that helps me do the conversion from the dictionary form to the ~te form

      : before giving it out, some refreshing examples

      Dictionary form --> ~te form

      Strong verbs

      iu (to say) --> itte

      matsu (to wait) --> matte

      naru (to become) --> natte

      nomu (to drink) --> nonde

      yobu (to call) --> yonde

      shinu (to die) --> shinde

      kiku (to listen) -->kiite

      oyogu (to swim) --> oyoide

      hanasu (to speak/to let go) --> hanashite

      Weak verbs

      neru (to sleep) --> nete

      okiru (to wake up) --> okite

      Irregular

      kuru (to come) --> kite

      iku (to go) --> itte

      ? huh what's all that strong/weak/irregular thingy about

      Just look at the end of the dictionnary form and compare it with the other. You'll notice that the strong verbs impose a change in the -te form while the weak one only switch the "ru" to a "te" and that's it

      Now you'd say hw do I recognize a weak from a strong when the end of the dictionary form is RU

      Well, I guess the answer is that there like any other languages things to "know" and to learn by heart

      ...so ganbatte

      oh yes, the trick

      utsuru-tte mubunu-nde ku-ite gu-ide su-shite

      oO

      yep that's it, you learn that by heart or drink it like a bitter medicine you name the expression and may find your way out of most situations

      ? Still don't get it

      the endings -u, -tsu and -ru (strong) require a -tte when switching forms

      the -mu -bu and -nu require -nde

      and so on

      have another look at the example above, given in that order, and you'll know what I mean

      ^^ aiya...yes...4 points for tokichan

      : Q3

      Everyday, I go to school by bus
      Mainichi basude gakkou e ikimasu

      I learn japanese from a Japanese teacher
      (Nihonjin no sensei (kara/ni) nihongo wo (naratte imasu/naraimasu

      I wish to go to Japan and make/encounter japanese friends
      Nihon e itte nihonjin no tomodachi wo tsukuritai desu

      Underlined parts are the most significant for points distribution on the sentence, and usually they're particles and verb forms
      ^^
      Also brackets indicate other possibilities
      Tokichan, you have forgotten two "wo" which is only too common
      I don't think I'll ever stop forgetting those, all the same, I'll take 1 point for each, that's e good way to remember that particle lol
      ^^
      Your only other accountable mistake was on the wish form
      (It was missing desu and na made it sound unformal (^^ it really was
      I'll take only 0,5points because the unformal construction was correct

      As a side note, be careful about the "i" sound transcription, which you made "e" like in english, in ikimasu, mainichi and tsukuritai

      6.5points

      : Q4

      First thank you Toki chan for taking the exam thouroughly, I didn't really know what to put for an essay topic on this first time
      : now to the commentaries

      You have used both formal and unformal constructions, but as I didn't clearly specify to which to stick it will be overlooked
      Which means really nothing to correct everything is fine, except that you shouldn't add a question mark after ka, this is usually found in written unformal, and that you mistyped hajimemashite
      Oh and I supressed douzo yoroshiku because I think it's only after full introduction between you two, that means as long as your penfriend hadn't replyed I think you shouldn't ask her to be kind to you
      ^^
      Please correct me if i'm wrong, onegai shimasu

      Anyway here are both versions
      Formal version

      ^__^ Konnichiwa Chihiro san

      ? Ogenki desu ka
      Watashi no namae wa Toki desu
      Watashi wa kuwaito jin desu
      Hajimemashite
      Anime ga suki desu
      Watashi wa nihon bunka ni kyomiga arimasu
      Anata wa doko ni sunde imasu ka
      Nansai desu ka
      Sorosoro shitsurei shimasu
      Dewa mata

      Toki

      in opposite to the (approximate) unformal one

      ^__^ Konnichiwa Chihiro chan

      ? Genki
      Atashi no namae wa Toki da
      Atashi wa kuwaito jin
      Hajimemashite
      Anime ga suki
      Atashi wa nihon bunka ni kyomiga aru
      ? Anata wa doko ni sunde iru
      Nansai desu ka
      (Sorosoro shitsurei (suru
      Ja mata

      Toki

      (And 5 points for tokichan (see it's not that hard folks

      Which gives us a total of
      22/18.5

      omedetou

      Keep it up and everybody ganbatte
      I will try to post another one in the coming week
