      Re: megaman zero 1

It's a few years later and here we have Mega Man Zero, an X-series spin-off on the diminutive Gameboy Advance. This game has been advertised as a different kind of Mega Man game and it most certainly is as you the reader will see not only from this review, but from even a minute or so worth of actual gameplay.

      1. Story(10/10)

The story begins with Zero awakening many hundreds of years into the future after the X-series ended, or something to that extent. Now then, Zero has no memory for some reason but has to save the world from what appears to be Mega Man X himself.

Now some people truly dislike classic games such as Mega Man or Contra suddenly getting complex stories like they were an RPG or something. Me, I don't mind it as long as it doesn't get in the way of this kind of game. And so it doesn't. The story is actually pretty good and has a fine element of mystery to it. It will keep you wondering about some things (in a good way, not a bad continuity way) until the very end. It works with the game.

      2. Graphics(8/10)

The graphics are also very nice with many frames of animation for Zero, the enemies, and whatnot. Very cool stuff. Zero's saber animation is fluid and doesn't hinder the control of him in any way.

There's also the cool little effect of enemies and bosses getting sliced in half when they are finished with the Z-Saber. The Japanese version had basically a river of blood come out of the enemies when you slashed them in half with the saber. As you've probably heard or guessed by now that was taken out. This is not where the point loss occurs and on some levels the edit makes sense because, let's face it, robots don't bleed. I guess they could bleed oil, but since when is oil red? But if you have some psychotic devotion to hating this game due to this edit then I'm going to go ahead and say you wouldn't have liked this kind of game had that not been edited.

The point loss here has to do with character design. Designs for the most part are very good. It all looks like generic futuristic clothing and equipment. Zero, however, looks horrible. You thought he looked kinda that way before, well now he's just about on fire. The redesign also makes little sense because of continuity reasons which I won't spoil for the sake of this review. In any case, Zero himself has such an ugly redesign that it cost this category two full points.

      3. Control and Gameplay(10/10)

Play control, as with all Capcom games, is exquisite. You can't blame this game for any screw-ups you should happen to make. Control is very responsive and in a game that moves at such a fast pace as this one it practically has to be. If you don't dodge, you're dead…simple as that. You get more weapons than the Saber and gun and those are easily useable in the game. No problems with those. Too bad there weren't more weapons, though.

The gameplay is pretty much typical Mega Man / Mega Man X stuff. You run around shooting or slashing enemies and at the end of the level you take out a boss. Spikes, pits, weird jumps, and traps are all still here and the Mega Man feel of the game is not lost. This game has a severe lack of extra lives and isn't an infinite continue game like all the other Mega Man games so it is much more difficult. This is the only real variation from the usual Mega Man gameplay other than the boss weapons thing that I will explain later in the Innovation category.

      4. Music(10/10)

Now I've never really thought music was a game maker or breaker. It was always more of just an extra thing for me. The music in this game is pretty average from what I've listened to of it. My soundtrack for this game was mostly the tunes I had playing in the background with the game muted. I give my soundtrack a 10 and that of the actual game as well because I only really deduct points in a category for bad things and there's nothing wrong with average videogame music.

      5. Innovation(7/10)

We see quite a few innovations in this game over previous X or regular Mega Man titles. First there are these supporting Cyber Elves that perform a variety of things. They can heal you, attack enemies, do something weird to a boss, etc. The Elves were an interesting addition although they seem to me like another attempt by a videogame to cash in on the Pokemon market. Ch-ching!

As mentioned before, this game features very few lives and continues and such. This makes this already difficult game that much more difficult. You can find yourself frustrated enough to throw the GBA into a wood chipper at times. The only thing I can say is keep at it. The difficulty here isn't too much of a detracting factor but the lack of lives / continues comes off more as an artificial way of making an already difficult game more difficult. And I realize that I said that twice…oh well.

The major detractor in this category is with the usual Mega Man boss set-up. Like in other Mega Man games you have to go around and kill some bosses. You pick them this time out of missions rather than the boss himself as you don't find out who the boss is usually until the end of the mission. Only in this game you don't get a unique weapon from each boss…rather you either get element chips that grants your other weapons an ''elemental touch'' like a Fire Sword in an RPG or something. Now sometimes you don't get a chip and instead you get a unique weapon created by some scientist that is your ally. Unfortunately there are only a few of these. Gameplay can get a bit repetitive this way and this innovation rather detracts from the game experience. This is one case where the old way of doing things was better. So this game has far from a lack of innovation, just a few innovations that don't work out as well as one would hope. Still, as I've said in other reviews you can't fault a game company for trying something a little different.

Cons (or don't get it if you can't live with these)

As with all other games I usually have qualms. Now these can be either minor or major. This category is where all the major ones get listed that will noticeably affect your gameplay experience. They have an effect on the final score as they were factored into the above review calculations. Here they are:

-Insane difficulty level due to lack of continues / one-ups
-Few unique weapons to be gained from bosses like other Mega Man games
-Zero's redesign is horrific and makes no sense
