[HIDE/]The Great Mechanics series is published quarterly by Futabasha, covering Gundam regularly and other real/super robot series. The most recent issue contained an interview with Shin Sasaki, who is involved with promotion of Gundam-related products for Sunrise's Rights Sales Dept. The following are comments by Mr. Sasaki as he talked about the current status of Gundam and what the future holds.
Q - Explain the current situation with Gundam
Sasaki - Right now, there are several variations of Gundam out there. First off, you have the traditional hand-drawn animation and full CG series varying from ultra real to SD Gundam Force's new style and the experimental type with Evolve. The style of expression has increased with different backgrounds existing at the same time. Regarding the target audiences, we are aware that SDGF is for children while MS IGLOO is for the core target. However, we do not intentionally narrow down the market. College students who watched First Gundam are now in their 40's, but they won't easily accept SEED, which is for a younger audience. In return, plamodels are being sold as a Gundam hobby adults can enjoy. This kind of situation wasn't anticipated 20 years ago at Sunrise production. As Gundam continued for 25 years, the overall volume has increased, market variety has increased, and the kinds of production methods have increased. We now feel Gundam is connecting with various places.
Q - One of the reasons behind MS IGLOO
Sasaki - Different groups of fans existing led to the creation of SEED and MS IGLOO at the same time. We believe we are answering the needs of an increasing fanbase.
Q - What's another reason behind MS IGLOO?
Sasaki - We believe we have to prevent the inflation of Gundam within the UC world. In the center, we have the white Gundam piloted by Amuro and surrounding him are the several other types of special Gundams. We have to maintain this. However, we did have those mass-produced ground-type Gundams (*laughs*), but the basis is only one Gundam. If we were to make a new UC world series under this policy, we have to create a Gundam series without having a Gundam in it. This work is one of the many scenarios in the UC world and, at the same time, gives the feeling that Char and Amuro exist. This led to the creation of MS IGLOO. It is a challenging series as we try to get the fans to approve of this as part of Gundam.
Q - Why Zeta now?
Sasaki - As you are probably aware, it is true that the idea of a Zeta movie compliation existed in the past. If someone has to do it, it needs to be director Tomino. While that idea floated around, it looked like director Tomino was waiting for the perfect moment because he worked on other series like Turn A Gundam and Overman King Gainer. We did not aim for Zeta's 20th anniversary from the beginning.
The thing I feel the most from working in the Gundam industry, there are many such as teenagers who started with the games or foreigners who know about an MS named Zeta Gundam, but never touched the series. The hurdle for them to watch all 50 episodes is high. But if it were a 3-part movie, it would be easier for them to watch it. Many more can experience Zeta's essence through the movies. The movies increase the opportunity for more fans to get to know Zeta. Then there are the SEED fans, who are now experiencing their own sequel with DESTINY. Those young fans might find Zeta refreshing.
Q - The possibilities that Evolve is creating
Sasaki - The purpose of Gundam Evolve is to be promotional video. We do not try to immediately merchandise it. For Sunrise, it serves as an experimental type of animation. It is a very good exercise for us. For example, are characters better with full CG or traditional hand-drawn animation? Currently, the anime industry is trying to figure this out. Doing this through Gundam Evolve is very advantageous for us. Right now, the Minerva from SEED DESTINY is handled by Evolve's studio. It uses the technologies from Evolve and I believe you will see more of this in other anime series.
Q - Thoughts on Gundam finally becoming a 2-generation character business
Sasaki - I believe we are at this stage because of the sudden increase in fan variation. One thing is SEED being broadcast in a favorable time slot. Second is that Gundam is becoming a 2-generation character business like Masked Rider and Ultraman as we have hoped. We are beginning to see fathers and sons going to a hobby store where the father buys a Gouf for himself and an Impulse for his son. On top of this, we have the creation of female fans by SEED. This has widened the fan base more. Then we have Gundam Ace magazine where Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is telling the story of First Gundam. This is the current situation of Gundam.
Q - Future developments?
Sasaki - It is true that we currently have many projects, but I can't comment much about it. I can say one thing though. In the near future we should able to announce a series which fans who loved the UC will be happy about. Don't know how that series will turn out, but I want everyone to look forward to it.
