Casillas, to Realmadrid.com: “Working step by step, without getting obesessed, the good times will return”
It´s the start of a new season for Iker Casillas, or what is a new challenge for the Madrid keeper. He wants to improve himself and grow even more on the footballing level, but above all that he´s thinking about the team: “We have to take it step by step and in this way we´ll be able to once again bring joy to our supporters”.
Are you surpised by all that is still being generated around Real Madrid on your tour?
Every year that passes I´m more surprised. When you come here for the first time people really welcome Real Madrid, but it´s sure that every year they welcome us even more and the name of Real Madrid means a lot far from our borders.
What surprised you more, China or the United States?
The United States, as I already know China and knew that people have already been beginning to appreciate football for some time. I thought the United States was a country that only lived for the NBA or for American football, but little by little soccer is getting more well known. In Chicago and in Los Ángeles people responded very well.
How do you see this tour?
Like all of the ones we´ve done, enjoying the trip. Sometimes it´s a little tiring as it´s a lot of days, but I´m sure that within a few years you realize the things that you´ve experienced and seen. You see new places and in these two weeks you enter a different culture and a different world.
With three matches and three victories morale is going up.
The tour helps us to train, though this is not what it is for in theory. The tough part is when we go to Austria. Right now we treat it like a mini-holiday where you have to do your duty to entertain people. There´s no doubt that Real Madrid must win each match they play.
This year you´re lucky enough to have Luxemburgo from the very start.
Much better. Last year we had a lot of changes, which perhaps affected the performance of the team. Having three trainers always shows. This year what everyone wants is more continuity and tranquility, and I think the efforts of Luxemburgo last year were good and now we have to start off the new campaign well.
How about the first training sessions with Jaro?
Good. Each trainer is different. Manolo has a way of training and Pedro another. He has a lot of hopes of doing great things with the three from the junior team that we are, and in this sense we are happy.
This year Diego López will be your rival in goal.
I´ve been together with Diego for a couple of years. We already know each other from the lower ranks and he´s done enough work to merit being here with the phenomenal job he did in Real Madrid B. The last part of last season for him was very good and above all in the promotion group.
As a player who came from the second team you´re even more happy for the other five who are here on the tour.
I´ve always been in favour of them as I know what it´s like to be down there, I know what it´s like to suffer every day and what it is not to be valued as you should be. People come to the club with a lot of hope and willingness. Such as those like Diego coming up from the second team into the Second Division and also people like to see the second team lads in the first team.
How´s it going with the adaptation of Diogo and Pablo García?
Well. Just like with all the new signings who come to the team. They have to acclimatise to a new team, a new city, a new way of playing, and it´s always a little tough. We who´ve been here a while know how things are.
What does the team feel about the subject of Robinho?
I think a lot has been said about the subject, but it´s a thing between the club and him. Maybe too much is being said, but if a good player comes to Madrid, he´ll be welcome.
What are your hopes for this season?
This year Madrid has to take it step by step. We musn´t get obsessed by the three titles nor by one or two, but when we are in each competition, League, Cup or Champions, think about each of them. It´s a question of progressing calmly and I´m sure that things will work out by themselves.
And on the personal side?
Each year you have is a new challenge, and when you set the bar at 8 you´re asked for a 8.5, a 9. We all know that keeping yourself at the right level is hard, then to be at the same level and improve yourself each season. Personally, my last three seasons have been good, maybe not so good for the team, but I feel good and better all the time.
And what about your renewal?
The subject is on hold. It´ll be spoken about in due course, but right now we´re here on the tour and when and if it has to be talked about again it will be.
A message for the fans
We know we´ve had two empty-handed seasons, without giving the fans the pleasure of going to celebrate at Cibeles square, but we hope we´ll be able to get one, two, three titles. Hopefully we´ll be enjoying ourselves once again at Bernabéu.
