Chapter IV: Code “RED”…
“This is bad… Really bad”
Rufus rushed to his R-Lab to find it in total chaos… the alarms were blasting away and everyone was running around in panic. On his way in, he found his lead assistant; Rose, along with the rest of his staff…
Rufus:
What the hell is going on here? What happened?
Rose:
I don’t know! It’s like the security system has gone haywire!
Rufus:
Calm down… now tell me; what’s wrong.
Rose:
Well, the security system shows maximum breach and code: “RED” in an uncharted area near your private lab! And all the other areas are completely normal! It doesn’t make any sense at all!
Just as Rose completed her words, Rufus’s face darkened… He can no longer hide his expressions…
Rufus:
Oh my god… Rose! To my lab immediately! The rest of you! Evacuate now!
Rufus and Rose ran to the lab… everything seemed normal on their way. As they entered the lab they noticed a red light above one of the mainframe computers… On seeing this, Rufus went to his office and pressed a hidden button beneath it, then, the mainframe computer started to move out of its place…
Rose:
A secret door!
Rufus:
Correct, it leads to my father’s secret lab. And that’s where the alarm is coming from.
Rose:
I never knew it even existed!
Rufus:
Nobody ever knew, besides, I don’t know what’s in there myself.
Rose:
How come?!
Rufus:
My father told me never to go in there, unless something like this happens.
The door was like a slide-shutter with two card swipes on each side. Rufus reached behind the computer, took a couple of cards, and handed one of them over to Rose…
Rufus:
Here, see those card swipes? We’re to use both of them at the same time.
They placed their cards on the card swipes…
Rufus:
Ready?
Rose:
Ready!
Rufus:
On three… one, two.. THREE!
For a moment, they could hear the grinding of machinery from within the walls, then, as the door started to slide open, warm breeze came out along with some fine dust… when the door was fully open, they could see nothing but darkness…
Rose:
It’s too dark to see anything…
Rufus:
Alright… There’s a flashlight and a small shotgun in my desk… go get ‘em.
She went to the desk and got them. Then she handed the shotgun over to Rufus…
Rufus:
Well, let’s go!
They started through the dark corridor using the flashlight. The place was full of rusty pipes and webby masses of wire, the floor was somewhat damp and muddy, and the atmosphere was disturbingly humid…
Rose:
Sure is creepy…
Rufus:
yeah… It seems to me that this place has been sealed off for a very long time, long before my father died… <cough> This dust is killing me!
Rose:
Dr. Rufus! Over there! A light!
Rufus:
Let’s check it out!
They advanced towards the light while avoiding numerous Pipes and wirings, and finally, they made it to the light.
Rufus:
Well… This is it. I didn’t want you to get involved in all this…
Rose:
No, it’s alright. I’ve already made it this far, so I might as well go all the way.
Rufus:
Are you sure? You still have time to go back…
Rose:
Rufus… I’m not gonna let you go alone… what if something happens to you?
Rufus:
I…uh… Rose…
Rose:
Yes?
Rufus:
Thank you…
She only replied with a smile…
Rufus:
Well, it’s now or never…
Rufus activated the shutter and they finally entered Dr. Hojo’s secret lab… It was a large room with various experimental machinery here and there… to the left there was another shutter… at the far end of the room, there was a giant container made of steel, it was half buried in a large well-like hollow… In front of it there was a small control panel. The phrase “WARNING: BIOORGANIC DEEP FREEZE INCUBATOR LEAKAGE DETECTED” appeared on it, below it was the words “ENTER PASSWORD”…
Rufus:
“Enter password” huh…
Rose:
Do we have one?
Rufus:
No… I suggest we take a look around…
To their right was a row of red books on a shelf with a black book between them…
Rose:
Now that’s odd…
The book was titled “The Shadows within”…
Rose:
Look! There’s an apostrophe between the word “Shadow” and the “s”!
Rufus:
It looks like it has been made with a pen or something… I’ll bet my father did it.
Rose:
What does it mean I wonder?
Rufus:
Hmmm… let’s see……….. Hey! I got it! It means: The Shadow is within! I’ll give it a try!
Rufus types the word: SHADOW... the panel gave a positive response…
Rufus:
Hey! It worked!
The outer compartment of the container started to sink into the well, while the central compartment rose up producing a thick cloud of mist in the process… They could hardly see a ghostly image of a broken glass incubator… and from deep within the mist… they heard a sound…
