Former country, now autonomous region (pop., 2000 est.: 2,620,000), western China.
Tibetan Bod Chinese Xizang Hsi-tsang It is bordered by India
(including the Kashmir region), Nepal Bhutan and Myanmar the
provinces of Yunnan Sichuan , and Qinghai and Xinjiang
autonomous region. It has an area of 471,700 sq mi (1,221,600 sq
km), and its capital is Lhasa . Before the 1950s it was a unique entity,
with its own Buddhist culture and religion, that sought isolation from
the rest of the world. Situated on a plateau averaging 16,000 ft (4,900
m) above sea level, it is the highest region in the world. Its
surrounding mountain ranges include the Kunlun Mountains and the
Himalayas ; Mount Everest rises on its border with Nepal. Tibet
emerged as a powerful Buddhist kingdom in the 7th–8th centuries
AD. It came under the control of the Mongols in the 13th century and
the Manchu dynasty in the 18th century. After the 1911–12 Chinese
revolution it became independent under British influence. The
Chinese communists invaded and occupied the region in 1950 and
harshly suppressed an anti-Chinese rebellion in 1959. In 1965 it was
made a nominally autonomous region within communist China . Its
Buddhism-based culture was nearly destroyed during the Chinese
Cultural Revolution . Some religious and economic reforms have
occurred since the late 1970s, but independence movements have
increased since the late 1980s. Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai
Lama set up a government-in-exile in India in 1959 and continued his
attempt to rally world opinion for Tibetan independence.

Tibet
Tibet, China Tibet, also known as TAR, is a democratic region in China that is very poor, and is mainly inhabited by Buddhists. Throughout its long history, Tibet at times has governed itself as an independent state and at other times has had various levels of association with China . Whatever China 's involvement in Tibetan affairs, Tibet's internal government was for centuries a theocracy, under the leadership of Buddhist lamas, or monks. In 1959 the Dalai Lama fled to India during a Tibetan revolt against Chinese control in the region. China then took complete control of Tibet, installing a sympathetic Tibetan ruler and, in 1965, replacing with a Communist administration (Encarta 1). The TAR covers an area of about 472,000 square miles. It is bounded on the north by Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province; on the east by Sichuan and Yunnan provinces; on the south by Myanmar (formally known as Burma), India, Bhutan, and Nepal; and on the west by India. Lhasa is the region's capital and largest city (Schaller 72). With an average elevation of more than 12,000 feet, Tibet is the highest region on earth, and for this reason, it is sometimes called the Roof of the World.
