In this series Alex Jaeger demonstrates his process for designing a futuristic military vehicle based on descriptions from a science fiction screenplay. In this second volume with an emphasis on the production pipeline he shows how to break down a three-quarter view of a vehicle design into orthographic views for a 3D modeler and then demonstrates the process for rendering that three-quarter view into a final presentation piece in Adobe Photoshop . Alex begins with the side orthographic view showing you exactly how to correctly measure and position each element from your design. He leads you through his workflow to then create top front and back views as well as alternates for "on-road" and "off-road" modes. Throughout the orthographic demo Alex focuses on keeping the design accurate well organized and easy for a 3D modeler to "read". He then moves on to rendering the three-quarter view in Photoshop adding details to the line drawing and finishing with color lighting graphics photo-textures scale cues and atmosphere to present the vehicle in its world and bring the final design to life.

In this tutorial Joe takes you through his process for modeling a Colt 1911. Using an image plane for reference he creates the low polygon slide handle trigger guard trigger barrel hammer and sights. He then creates the Sub-D and high poly slide handle and barrel models. Joe shows how he optimizes the geometry for rendering normal maps and lays out the UVs of the slide handle and barrel. He discusses trouble shooting normal maps common errors and things to look for and demonstrates how to create a grayscale 2D normal map and composite it over the high poly normal map. Finally Joe completes the final model in Maya with textures applied.

In this lecture, Matt Hartle will lead you through the steps necessary to produce a finished visual effects shot from conception to the final composited rendering. Along the way we will examine modeling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering using Mental Ray. We will then composite the rendered layers in After Effects, using a 3D composition with a camera exported from Maya. By bringing in the camera from Maya we will be able to integrate photographed elements with our rendered elements to create a final composite. Render layers from our Maya scene will include beauty, ambient occlusion, particles, ground fog and color alpha among others.
