Smiling across cultures
While smiling can be great way to communicate across cultures, there are number of things to watch out for. A smile doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere in the world.
In England
It denotes happiness or a desire to please
In the United States
It is used as a greeting. Americans, perhaps because of their great dental care, are fond of big toothy smiles. Except in big cities, they’re likely to smile at strangers in lifts, in the shop, basically anywhere
In Eastern Europe, including Russia and the Czech Republic
It’s not usual to smile at people you don’t know. It is considered quite inappropriate and could signal either that you are not serious about the situation, or that you may be simpleminded
In China
People don’t smile when they are introduced, and are just as likely to smile when they are worried or embarrassed as when they are happy
In Korea
People will smile to save embarrassment
In Japan
People may smile to express happiness, anger, sadness, confusion, disappointment or even dislike. A smile can often be a way of controlling feelings, and sometimes to ‘save face’
!So, if you’re traveling abroad, don’t automatically assumer someone is smiling because he’s happy
! I hope you enjoyed it
