Well i still didn't try the game on the PS2 so it will take me time to answer your questions
the reason that i didn't try it yet that it won't work with my PS2 (i tried it to make sure of it) and am planning to buy one soon, maybe next week
i do have a Dail-Up connection, even if it got disconnected everything you did will stay and won't go away, ask the guys that played the game before me they know better

sorry i couldn't make any help, but once i get everything ready so i can play it at home i'll try to answer you the other questions
and inshallah if i had time will open a new Subject talking about the Hard Disk Drive
