My Trip to Singapore
I was so happy with my level of understanding with the English language when I was a 17 years old high school boy. But I did not have the chance to test it in a real situation it was always from the book to the paper. One day my father said “We are going to have the summer vacation in Singapore for about two weeks”. Although, that it was only two weeks I realized many things from it and it means a lot to me.
I was so happy that I will use my English language and interact with new people. As soon as we arrived I felt like I am in another world people speak the English language so easily and instantaneously. I was surprised that all the newspapers, advertisements, shop signs and even TV channels were in English. Moreover, I noticed that any 6 years child can speak English much better than me. Every time I speak with someone they stare at me and say” what did you say” or “what do you mean?” for the first time in my life I realized that I am not good enough with the English language people can not understand me. So, I became afraid from speaking in English and lost my confidence.
Gladly, my father noticed that and he asked me “Why are you afraid from speaking in English?” I tolled him “I am not good with it and my mind becomes blank when someone says “I did not understand you”. He smiled and said “I will tell you what to say and everything will be fine”. For the followed 4 or 5 days I focused in my fathers actions watching him every time he says something and he was teaching me what to say in any situation starting from “How much…..?”.After that I begun to build confidence and I started to take the initiative to start a conversation.
Although, that we only stayed for about 14 days those days were very special and I learned from them so much. Every time I speak in English I remember my father and I thank him too much for that experience and for being with me in my hardest moments.
