In Final Fantasy XII, monsters are able to think, not like any other Final Fantasy games. Not just lurking around, they are able to trap the player in different ways. Be sure to check on the navigation map for monsters because they can emerge suddenly and without warning. Monsters can plan (e.g. ambushes, support other monsters if they see the party fighting against them), they can flee and recover, consider obstacles, etc.
Not only can monsters think, they can detect the party by sight, sound, or odor. Although monsters can think, detecting the party is not new to the series. Monsters in Final Fantasy XI detect players in the same manner
