(LEARN IT and LEARN IT WELL )..
"IT Skills in a Tough Job Market"
Communications of the ACM, October 2005
Analyzing data from Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com, three university professors in the information sciences field identify the most-sought-after IT skills during the three-year period from April 2002 to April 2005. By common consensus, it appears that Web programming has "jumped into a commanding lead" in the total number of jobs requiring programming skills, being mentioned in 42.6% of all job ads. In addition, UNIX, C++, Java, SQL Programming and Oracle database are the other top five skills in the current job market, with each of these mentioned in close to 20% of advertised IT jobs. As the professors point out, though, realize that this is just a snapshot look at skills demanded by employers: realize that skills in demand change over time, and position yourself accordingly.
After offering a few insights about the popularity of Web programming, the article examines the statistical evidence related to Web programming job openings. According to the findings of the study, demand for Java was relatively steady between 2002 and 2004. In fact, Java is now demanded in more than 20% of all job openings, making it a "mainstream programming language." In addition, SQL programming is now demanded in more than 20% of the advertised jobs. While Visual Basic was mentioned in 11.4% of all job ads, it appears that future growth in demand for .NET programming skills could act as a brake on future demand for Visual Basic. The percentage of jobs requiring .NET has grown more than 250% over the three-year period represented by the study.
In terms of operating systems skills, the demand for UNIX and Windows skills seems to be holding steady, while demand for Linux skills seems to be increasing. Today, 13.6% of the job ads mention Linux skills. In terms of database skills, Oracle is still the most demanded database skill, with over 22% of all positions requiring Oracle. SQL server skills are growing in demand and represent the second most demanded database skill, being required in 16% of all IT jobs in 2005. Since an average of 5% of all positions advertised required vendor or industry certifications, it appears that certification might give a candidate a slight edge in a tight job market.
