As of this morning, the HD-DVD Player attachment for Xbox 360 is now priced at $129.99. The $50 drop was reported by Major Nelson, who reminds us of the mail-in offer for five free HD-DVD movies with the purchase of the player.
Last month, Warner Bros. announced that it will drop support for the HD-DVD format in May, instead focusing on Blu-ray film releases. Universal is also believed to be moving away from the HD-DVD format, prompting Toshiba and other hardware manufacturers to institute aggressive HD-DVD player price drops in recent weeks. Today's announcement appears to be the latest step in that process of attempting to regain momentum for the format by undercutting the competition where it often matters most -- the wallet.
Amazon.com listed the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player as its gaming "Deal of the Day" this morning (via Cheap Ass Gamer), briefly selling the unit for $79.99 until its supply was exhausted.
