Miaka, a 15-year-old girl preparing for her high school examinations, is about to experience an adventure that will change her life forever. A child with a natural passion for history, she gets sucked into the past world of ancient China, and must become the High Priestess of the Red Peacock - a title that she must live up to by fighting for good over evil.
Miaka Yuuki and her best friend, Yui Hongo, discover a book titled The Universe of the Four Gods in the library. As they become engrossed in the story, they are pulled into the world of ancient China in turmoil, because of the war between two rival states, Konan and Kotou.
Now in ancient China, Miaka becomes the High Priestess of Konan, while Yui becomes the High Priestess of Kotou. Once friends, they are now enemies, fighting on different sides. Each princess is guarded by seven warriors, but both girls fall in love with Tamahome, a seishi belonging to Miaka's Suzaku (Red Peacock order). Now, they are not only enemies in war, but also in love.
Miaka faces numerous dangers, but her seven seishis of Suzaku No Miko - Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake and Chiriko - pull her through, even endangering their own lives just to see that Miaka is safe and kept alive.
But Miaka's tale does not end there. Fighting for her survival, and to get back to the real world, she experiences strange encounters that take her back to her life in ancient China. Will the past let go, or will Miaka have to keep travelling back and forth, from the past, into the present, and then to the future?
Curious Play, an animation by Yuu Watase, creator of Pajama de Ojama, Epotrance! Mai, Ayashi no Ceres and Shishunki Miman Okotowari, is probably one of the best loved anime series in the world. Having inspired over 200 dedicated websites, created by fans of the series, it comes complete with action, romance, intrigue, mystery, and good ol' anime magic.
